Hi everyone I just joined this because I urgently need help. My 2 guinea pigs (Gary And Gizmo) are both nearly 3 and pretty much ever since we got them they’ve had some spinach, some kale and about a third of a yellow pepper everyday but I found out this could be bad. Do I need to change what I feed them and can you suggest any better foods?

I think people here will say limit the kale and spinach. Pepper is great! Although mine will only eat green pepper. They also like cucumber, baby gem lettuce and celery!

High calcium veg such as kale and spinach should be kept limited to a small amount once per week. Pepper is absolutely fine to be fed daily. Do change their diet now that you know but the calcium absorption process is a complex one and any changes will take time to have an effect.

The best way limit to calcium intake is by filtering their drinking water and keeping pellets strictly limited to one tablespoon or less per piggy per day. Hard water and overfeeding pellets contribute a lot of calcium to the diet hence these measures.

Piggies will have white pee as it is the body’s way of getting rid of excess calcium but it is only concerning if the pee stains left on bedding feel gritty.

This is our feeding guide which provides further information. You are aiming to have the bulk of their daily food intake to be hay, with around one cup of veg per pig per day, with the very limited amount of pellets.
