Hello I'm just new to the forum but i have a problem and was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.
So my 6 - 7 year old guinea pig Penny has just been diagnosed with multiple tumours of the liver and kidney. She was bleeding and was given some medication which stopped it, however she is extremely skinny and her bones are showing all over her body.
She is still eating and drinking but has slowed down a lot and doesn't move much. I'm am just wondering if she is suffering or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :(

Oh I'm very sorry on the bad news. Poor piggy. You know your piggy best but by the sounds of it and the location of the tumours it could be that she is in pain yes. What did the vet say?

I'm so sorry! It can be hard to tell if they are uncomfortable or not. I try to look for normal behaviors- eating, drinking, grooming themselves. Has the vet offered any meds as far as pain control goes?

Hi! I am very sorry. As long as she is eating, she still has the will to live, but it would be good to put her on pain relief.

Hi everyone, to tell you the truth the vet it pretty useless and just prescribed antibiotics for 5 days and then said if she stops eating then there is nothing more that can be done. I am bringing her down in 2 days so will ask for pain medication for her but she just looks super sick.

Awww so sorry to hear this. We knew with ours as she just started to go off all her food not even eating grass and was hiding up all of the time. Fingers crossed for you and little piggy xx

If she is eating & skinny she possibly isn't absorbing the food she's eating. Is her appetite the same as it's always been or greatly reduced. What about her behaviour is that the same. She probably in pain so needs Pain relief. To get a piggy to her age you've been a fantastic piggy slave.
I know with mine when I can look at them & ask myself am I keeping my pet alive, because I can't live without them, or am I going to PTS my pet, because I have to end there suffering.

If your piggy is struggling to eat, you can try to top her up with syringe feed; if you haven't any recover formula at home, you can use mushed up pellets instead and prep a syringe tip accordingly, as shown in our step-by-step guide. Hay makes about 80% of the daily food intake, but it is impossible to control and it is often the food group that is dropped first, so seeing your piggy munch on some veg can be deceptive. Pain is often at the bottom on weight loss. Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

Hi guys thanks for the help. I was looking in the area and found an exotic veterinary clinic in the Co. Antrim area so have an appointment booked for 2. She is now not drinking much but is still taking the odd sip.
Will see how the appointment goes at 2 but will let's use know how it goes.
Once again thanks for all the help guys.

Fingers very firmly crossed. Northern Ireland is unfortunately a place where hardly any vets have knowledge of small furries.

Can you please add "Northern Ireland" to you details, as that allows us to formulate any advice in a very detailed manner to get the best out of any vet visit.

Yea not much here apart from two clinics, which is one in newtownards and one in comber.
I'm hoping something can get sorted today.
Also my my info is updated now.

Thanks! All the best. It is always good to get a second opinion.

Please consider letting your girl go if she is starting to really suffer. It is one of the most heart-breaking, but most loving gifts we can make a beloved pet; and it is sometimes the only gift we have left to give. :(

Hello and welcome. I'm sorry your piggy is poorly. Sending healing vibes.

Hi guys, so bad news, I took her to the vet and decided that it was the best option for her to be PTS.
After hearing that she was worse than I initially thought it was the best option.
She had a good 7 years and went peacefully. Thanks for all the support guys as it helped a lot.
