Wigwig
Adult Guinea Pig
Usually when I cuddle Archie, he falls asleep and dreams, so I have been able to watch and feel him up close many time as he dreams.
Comparing him with my fiance and sister, both who I have seen dreaming up close and they have seen me dreaming up close, I think that Archie dreams very intense realistic dreams.
His eyes do the REM flickering, he sleep talks sometimes, his muscles move according to what hes dreaming about.
I think his most common thing to dream about is being outside eating grass, but variants of this dream; just being out in the run like normal, patrolling new areas of where he has seen on the horizon, or running wild in a dream field.
Other dreams are sex dreams and one that I am not sure of but he was snappy so maybe biting my parents or something. I believe I am present in the majority of his dreams.
I also am pretty sure that he knows when he is dreaming (he knows whats a dream and whats reality), and remembers dreams. Last night he must have been dreaming about walking up the back drive to the cattle grid because today when we were bringing him in, he absolutely marched up there. He would not take no for an answer. It is quite a long way, about a two minute walk and he was jogging along at a decent pace. When we got to the end, I picked him up and took him across so he could see all the way down the cow field, which seemed to satisfy whatever his urge was.
I also am pretty sure that he can piece together the lay of the land, of parts he has seen before and join it up with new parts, and so has quite a large map of the general vicinity in his mind.
It would be absolutely fascinating to see brain scans of his mind at work. I think its very interesting to think about a guinea pigs concept of the abstract and memory of both real and abstract.
