I have a about a year old guinea pig and I just noticed that his eye seemed to be in bad shape, should I worry? I'm planning to take him to the vets next week for a check-up but should I make it sooner? He is currently living with a baby male guinea pig that I placed with him about a week ago so I'm wondering if he could of just scratched it. Your thoughts and advice would be appreciated! I attached a picture of his eye down bellow (keep in mind he can open his eye almost all the way, also it looks worse in photo's then it does irl).

I forgot to mention that his other eye looks good & clear

Personally I would take him to the vets sooner than that, even if it is the weekend/bank holiday, as time is of the essence when dealing with eye problems/injuries. If he's scratched it he'll need eye drops and lubricating gel (but the vet will be able to check).

You can’t leave eyes, they can be very serious x Hoping you can get there soon and he makes a full recovery.

Hi!

Eye injuries and infections can deteriorate very quickly. Please have them always seen by a vet as soon as possible.
By next week it can be too late to save the eye or it may take you weeks on very strong antibiotics once the infection penetrates deeper into the eye.
Please never take an eye problem lightly! The sooner you treat, the better, quicker and cheaper the chance of a full and problem-free recovery!

The good news is unless the damage is too bad, promptly treated eye injuries and infections usually heal well and comparatively quickly just with the help of antibiotic eye drops and artificial tear gel to keep the eye hydrated and to support the healing process. Please wait any artificial tear gel or drops (the gel is effective for longer and easier to get into the eye) for at least half an hour after any other drops to allow them to be fully absorbed.

All the best.

Update: I took him to the vets the night of. They gave him eye drops and a liquid medicine for an upper respiratory infection, they thought he had...It's been about a week now and I see a lot of improvement, his eye looks almost healed! No liquid coming out or anything. Also, he's being a good sport with taking his medicine & he's almost back to normal. :)

Thank you for the update! We are always happy to hear when a piggy is making a good recovery; so often we never back.
