For a while I’ve wondered if my boy Charlie has some problems with his eye sight. He‘s always been pretty skittish but over the past few months I’ve noticed a slight cloudiness to his eyes. It’s not super noticeable, in fact I only ever really notice it when the suns shining on him. But tonight I noticed something a bit odd on my new piggy spy cam…

Charlie’s eyes are definitely duller than my other two pigs, who are of a similar age to Charlie.

Could he have impaired eyesight? Is there anything I should be doing if he has? He’s pretty skittish but he’s always been that way. Other than that he navigates around just fine.

If you have any concerns about your piggy's eyes, then please do see a vet.

Hi!

Please have Charlie vet checked. He may have a cataract or an eye infection. We can only guess. Neither of them is uncommon.

:agr: A vet is the best placed to examine and tell you if there’s any problem with the eye.

If the vet should diagnose a cataract, please be sure that the vet checks for diabetes as well. Cataracts in both eyes can be a symptome of diabetes.
Of course they can also occcur in elderly or old piggies and some piggies have got a genetic predisposition for cataracts, but in younger piggies cataracts can be the first obvious sign of diabetes.

It's worth a vet check to make sure that it isn't a poke or other acute concern that needs antibiotic treatment. Otherwise, pigs can develop cataracts just like people do... I've had a couple cataract pigs and they generally coped quite well with decreased vision. Pigs really can't see that well anyhow. I agree that a check for diabetes is worthwhile because uncontrolled sugars can cause cataracts- that said, my cataract pigs didn't have diabetes and just had age-related cataracts with no other related conditions. Hope this helps a bit!
