My Guinea pig taco is 4 he’s a male and he’s been to 3 vets now the first vet we went to was because he chipped a tooth and was having issues eating we went to a vet 1 he had a bloat and Gut Stasis diagnosis vet wasn’t worried about the chip gave him simethicone and meloxicam a little later his teeth started wearing at a slant vet 1 had us come back to get his front teeth filed down the were filed shorter than ideal fast forward to his teeth grown in fully his teeth were wearing at an angle again we let it be for a bit to see if it would strengthen out hasn’t rlly we took him to vet 2 he have a antibiotic baytril and more meloxicam he’s had a toe that’s swollen and it hasn’t cleared up he’s been on it for a week and 3 or so days he’s prescribed for 14 days the vet said that if his teeth are still having issues we should pull the front ones not doing that at all after he said that we began looking for a new vet we went to vet 3 today and he has elongated teeth roots tmw he has an appointment to be put under anesthesia and his molars to be filed down today he was giving a shot for vitamin C just in case he’s low other than his teeth problems he seems to be a healthy happy piggy still interested in lovings and runs around jumps up into your arms etc his coat is shiny soft his eyes are clear and shiny but sometimes he’ll droop his eyes or sink them in causing his lower lid to sag and is that because his teeth are hurting him or ? I’ll give photos down below my biggest question is how long does this dental work last as this is not permanent and how at risk is he for dying under anesthesia this vet has performed this procedure many of times and will take her time he will be under for 20 minutes he weighs 1 pound 15.6 ounces I don’t want my pig to die but this is something that needs to be done I would love it if anyone could share their experience with their piggy going under and what to expect I believe he is in good hands

Here’s what I know:
If he is not eating as mush as he has been you need to syringe feed him.

Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

When guinea pigs go under anesthesia they have less than a 4% mortality rate, mostly due to other sickness. Make sure Taco’s vet has done a full health check before hand to reduce any risk. Make sure the veterinarian of choice also has lots of knowledge on information on guinea pigs since they are not the most studied topic in vet school. Ask to have your guinea pig caged away from any other species of animals to prevent any transmission of diseases. Ask to have your guinea pig’s temperature monitored in case they need to give it a blanket or ice pack. Also make sure your guinea pig is feed according before and after surgery. Follow all drug directions and ask questions even if you have to phone call them before or after. Make sure they also have emergencies medications prep for during the surgery. Make sure they position guinea pigs correctly during surgery to reduce the risks of hypoxia and respiratory arrest. Have them measure respiration and heart rate.

Hope that will help.

I’ve been syringe feeding him for about a month now she seem very knowledgeable about piggy’s seeing she’s caught with other vets have missed I’ll make sure to tell her that before I let him go in with mortality rate that means that’s how many die or that’s how many live after sorry if that’s a stupid question lol

Hi, I am very sorry to hear that your boy has elongated tooth roots. The eye dropping could be due to this or it could be a separate issue completely. Has your vet taken an X-ray of his jaw?

My Ella went under anaesthetic twice due to her teeth. Hers was an entirely different issue but she came through completely fine but she was only given a whiff of gas and wasn’t under for very long.

Please weigh your boy at the same time each day and if he is losing weight; he’s not eating enough and you will need to step in and syringe feed him.

Is your vet experienced with dentals? I am tagging in @furryfriends (TEAS) who is our dental expert x

The vet also said it could be caused by the tooth roots to we already had X rays from the other vets so she just looked at it and figured out the the issue I just wanna be sure he’s fully hydrated the vet doesn’t think he’s dehydrated so not rlly worried about that I do weigh him everyday and feed him critical care we’ve ran out of his apple and banana so he’s on the natural one and isn’t pleased about that lol he gets fed every 2-3 hours during the day and 4 hours at night his apple and banana and fresh hay is coming in a few days hoping his teeth filing will last him a while so I don’t gotta be so worried about him every time 😭

It’s good he’s had X-rays and that your syringe feeding him even if he isn’t keen. I was there a few weeks back with Ella and syringe feeding round the clock is exhausting but needs must. Give him 1ml of water for every 5ml of critical care. That will help keep him hydrated x

UPDATE
He is in the vets right now he should be getting ready to go get anesthesia now and getting trimmed up he’s getting a full health check before too

Best of luck Taco! My bunny has elongated roots and is doing really well. She hasn't had to have any surgery for 5 months now!
According to Miley's specialist, the growth of the teeth can slow with age meaning the gap between dentals can get longer.
I hope this is the case for you and Taco!
But for now, just focus on getting him home and keeping him comfy 😊❤️

He looks a bit like my Rainbow Bridge piggy Eric!

My sweet boy has joined your sweet boy on July 20th he was doing amazing after his surgery but unexpectedly passed a few days after ❤️‍🩹

Oh no I'm so so sorry 😢 It must have been a shock for you as he was doing well.
RIP Taco over the Rainbow Bridge - I'm sure he will meet my Eric and his buddy Larry there 🌈❤️

I’m so sorry to hear this. Popcorn high over the bridge gorgeous Taco.

I lost a piggy last year due to not recovering well from an anaesthetic. You were doing your very best for him but sometimes the call to the bridge is just too strong. Take care ❤️

I am so so sorry for your loss. I recently lost my sweet poppy after an operation. She had recovered so well almost a week post op but suffered a stroke out of nowhere and passed away a few days later. We just don’t know what’s going on in their tiny bodies. It’s the most heartbreaking thing to go through when you did what you did to relieve pain and make their lives better, I completely understand. Be gentle with yourself. Sending hugs x

I am so sorry for your loss....I can really feel your pain. My GP will also undergo teeth rasping and he is very weak. Chances of her survival is very less. We know the risks. But we have to take it otherwise she will starve to death despite of our syringe feeding she needs to eat by herself.

My sister had brought them when they were small kids. We treated them like a family member to us like a small baby.
Taking them to bath, hand feeding them, hay or Timothy hay is very rare in our country India so she used to walk a lot in search of them so that she can feed them, she used to trim their nails on her own, intact both of them reconcile her voice.. whenever my sister call them Bachi......( Kidds.....) They make happy noises and come out of their hideouts in a hope that they will get something to eat something special to eat.....Oh My God.......we love them.
I don't know how my sister and my family will cope up with this lose (if).
I also love them......I love them so much.....it is sad that such lovely creatures are not meant to live a long life.

Again; please could you stop resurrecting old threads. The OP has not been on the forum in well over a year
