Today I bought two baby Guinea Pigs for my daughters birthday. One of the Guinea Pigs has four toes on her left hind leg, but the toe on the left of that paw is only attached by a thread of skin. Is this common? I'm a bit worried that it will get caught on something and get ripped of :/ Advice please?

If it's not completely attached, it's best to have it removed surgically. Better that it's removed in a controlled way, than piggy taking it off himself like you say!

It is quite common. It is call polydactyl. If you search for that or 'extra toe' on the forum you will see that lots of us have come across this.

One of my sows has extra toes on both back feet. I haven't done anything and she is fine. I do sometimes trim the nails on the extra toes as they don't get worn down like the other toes do.

1 of my customers has 2 extre toes, cost him a fortune in shoes lol at least the guineas dont need shoes ..:)

Usually that extra piece of toe doesn't even have any blood flowing within in. One of Asti's son have it too.

My piggie that died a few months ago (of old age/ neumonia) had an extra toe that was loosely attached and we had it surgically removed as it dragged and could of easily been caught in something and ripped off.
