i’ve had my guinea pig for a little under 5 years, and recently i’ve noticed a large increase in small fly-like bugs in his cage. today, i had him out and while he was lying down, i noticed a bald patch under his upper leg. this bald spot had a very small, white, skin tag looking thing that i’m very worried about. i currently am attempting to clean his cage, and would appreciate some help on what to do or general information. i plan on taking him to the vet as soon as i can.

I’m afraid we can’t really advise on what to do other than see a vet. We can’t know what it might be. Flystrike is caused by bottle flies but that doesn’t sound like they are what you are seeing.

You can try to add a picture as that may help but we still can’t diagnose anything.

Our general care advice would be to switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh him each morning so that you can monitor hay intake more closely - this is important ad it enables you to step in with syringe feeding if needed (50g weight loss is the point at which you step in).

If they are tiny midge like flies then probably fruit flies which breed on veggies and fruit. Remove all leftover food from the cage after 1 hour. Regular spot cleaning should prevent this happening I.e. poop picking and removing any damp patches from pee corners and topping up with clean bedding

See a vet if you are at all concerned about his leg
