Hi, my young guinea pig has recently developed a sore on her back left paw. It has appeared on the top of her foot and takes the appearance of an open wound with pus rising from it. The rest of her paw is also swollen. We have been treating this by soaking her paw in a warm salt bath everyday and bandaging her foot straight after. I this a common guinea pig affliction? Is there anyway anyone would recommend treating it? We are not a high income family so taking her to the vet is a last resort and any other treatment would be preferable. Thanks.

I can't offer any advice I'm affraid, however I would definately take your piggie to the vets to get it checked out especially as it is an open wound with pus, that could be infected.
In the UK we have some vets that offer lower prices, However, I am unsure if there are any in Australia.

Sounds like she may need antibiotics. I understand it's a last resort but by the time you do take her she could be very poorly and cost lots more than it would cost right now to treat the infection.

I agree with Lisa. Please have her seen by a vet. If you wait too long, the infection may spread and will be much more expensive and difficult to clear.

Hi Rockfish, whereabouts in south QLD are you? (i'm in Victoria by the way)
If you contact the ACS (Asutralian Cavy Sanctuary-Brisbane) they maybe able to help you too, the girl to speak to is Jess :)
By what you've said your piggie does need some antibiotics for that wound to heal up. Maybe even some pain medication too. This is just from what i've experienced in my piggies.
I'd also speak to your vets (make sure they're cavy savvy) and ask if you can do a payment plan.
i'll pop a link on for you that the ACS has re recommended vets. Keep us posted on how your piggie is please :)

I also want to welcome you to the forum too :)
I do hope this information will help you

Hey guys, sorry I haven't replied before. I finally talked my mum into letting her go to the Vet (it coast $80 all up). The infection has spread to her leg :( but the vet has given me some antibiotics and is hopeful about her recovery :). Glynis, I am about 2 hours north of Brisbane and thanks for the list of vets :)
