Guinea pig health problem?

hi due to him recovering from stones it would be best to put him on cystease which will help to stop him getting them again also a veg change-low calcium veg...

cystease can be brought on the internet for £20 the tablets will last you 200 days, its the contents of 1 capsual into 2ml water draw up 1ml and give 1ml every day for life..

i have my ex bladder stone boar on this, they have a high chance for them coming back in the first 3 weeks post op, so defo get him on to the cystease x
 
I had mine on Cystaid, Citrus Phosphate(?), Avipro Plus, Baytril, Metacam and a diet of Timothy Hay and a few burgess pellets plus water.

i took him to vet first day he started sqeaking and they started treating him for cystitis or uti. 2 weeks later no change so more treatment. 2 weeks later they decided to xray and take it from there. He had his stone op, was massive so they told me, and still continued to squeak til he died over four weeks later. We tried everything we could think of, but he had lost so much weight neither i nor the vet could put him through another op as we didnt think he would survive it. I had such a battle with him and my other pig and i still lost them both, life sucks sometimes.

My house sounds so weird now, Pepper was really vocal anyway and squeaked all the time, but due to him sqeaking constantly every half hour for god knows how many weeks i miss it. In my head i can still hear it.

God i hope i did everything right :(
 
Fantastic to hear how well things are going for Barney, I'm so so pleased you were able to get to those vets, it makes all the difference not only to piggie, but to you too! (Half an owners worry is about finding a good vet in so many cases!)

I agree with Claire that Cystease is something worth thinking about, it is a natural remedy. Long term changes (e.g. diet) may help prevent the stones redeveloping. :)

I also live in a hard water area, and the vet said this can cause bladder stones in guinea pigs after prolonged use- He recommend's I buy low calcium content water in bulk from shops to use on the piggies- Which I'll do

I was told to do the same for one of my sows with bladder grit. Deeside is the brand recommended to me, 2 litres is about 77p from Waitrose which is pretty good. Royal Duchy is another one with very low calcium content, but it is more expensive.

The rest of my lot just get filtered water. :))

doglovinpiggylover - I hope you are ok. Even if you learn things now that you think might have helped your piggie, the point remains that you did everything you could with all your knowledge and the vets knowledge at that time. You couldn't have done anything different, you did your best. Bladder problems can be so cruel, I am lucky enough that none of mine have developed stones yet (touch wood it doesn't happen any time soon) but from reading and adivising others, I know it is one of the most draining experiences as an owner, having a piggie go through bladder problems. xx

I know i did my best absolutely.

I find it quite scary how many pigs get bladder stones, having said that, there are that many that dont also....think I'm just hearing it all the time now.

An update-

Barney has picked up a few of his old symptons which is worrying me a bit. He is squeaking a bit loudly still while "going to the toilet" but when he is not he is in good shape and is friendly.

He's been having low calcium water (The vet recommended that since we live in a hard water area) and cyst tablets up until a week ago. We will take him back tomorrow, but I was wondering what you think?

Another thing to note (Which I don't know could be related, or the problem) is I have noticed Barney is getting a lot of poos stuck and occasionaly I have to help him to get it out. I have read it could be impaction, and do you think that could be the problem? In fact, Barney seems to squeak more when doing that than peeing (I don't even know if he does it when peeing, it may just be while pooping). Thanks-
 
Got him booked in tonight at the vets I mentioned in Broxbourne (They are excellent)

I hope it's nothing too serious. I heard a bladder stone can damage the inside of the pigs bladder and that can cause some pain after the op, but is a month a bit too long for that?
 
It is better to have it checked; there is also the problem that new stones can form again very quickly.

We took him on Friday, and he went for an X Ray to check if more bladder stones had come back. Luckily, there were no stones present and he was in good shape (He hadn't lost weight). The vet believes it is an infection he's still got and we've got some medicines to give him, and a special herbal remedy that the vet made up. He is better, he's still squeaking occasionaly but hopefully this will be the last of it!
 
Update-

There has been an improvement but he is still squeaking a bit. I'd imagine it's an infection he's got, since there are no stones? He's still taking his meds-
He's not off his food at all and is fine 90% of the time
 
Operations in the bladder/boys bits area can possiby impinge later on the gut (hence impacted or funny poo habits).....any surgery on any mammal (including us!) runs the risk of adhesions/scar tissue etc as the healing process commences....One of my boys that was neutered has had recurrent gut problems (squeeking while pooing, impaction, bloat etc etc etc) since his op. Nowt much we can do except make him comfortable when it happens with pain relief and be careful with his diet as certain veggies trigger it......

It's REALLY good news there are no new stones :):)

Thanks, it is true that Barney has funny "poo habits", he seems to do 3 or 4 at the same time and often needs to be "helped" to get them out- Apart from that, he's very friendly and I don't think it is serious pain- We will make sure he's looked after even more! :)
 
Update-

Barney has been a lot better. It is very rare to hear him squeak now, and if he does, it's not very loud at all (I imagine his bladder is still a bit rough from the operation). He's a lot better and is getting better all the time, :))
