Our guinea pig Cupcake is about 1 year old, and I have just heard her making a strange sound. I have read about a hooting noise being a possible sign of a heat condition, so I asked my husband how he would describe the noise ( I didn't mention the word "hooting" to him, as I didn't want to put words into his head, but that was how he described it).
I heard a similar noise a couple of days ago. I've had a look at the lists of symptons for heart problems, and I don't think Cupcake has any others, but I'm going to be watching carefully. She's very keen for her food, and I think reasonably active, but of course this hot weather has made them all seem a bit tired.
Is there anything else other than heart issues that might cause them to make a hooting noise? Is it possible it might not mean anything sinister?
I think I should take Cupcake for a check-up, but do I need to rush to do this? How soon should I get her to the vet?
We do have a good practice to go to, but I need to make sure we see one of the more cavy savvy vets there.
