So, I’m new to this forum, and I’ll just be honest. I mainly joined looking for help for my piggy, sense there are no vets nearby my home for miles

About 2 and a half years ago I got two female Guinea pigs- Coco and Butters. They were both fairly healthy, and while they occasionally chattered at eachother and stole snacks, they never attacked eachother.

About 5-7 months ago, Butters died and Coco was forced to get used to living alone because I’m just a smol and my mother refused to buy her a friend, claiming Coco would attack them. She seemed to be fine. I tried my best to improve her life as best I could by spending extra time with her, letting her explore my room when she felt like it, and giving her a wide variety of veggies compared to what we had available when we first got the piggies.

Coco isn’t the most friendly. She bolts when I walk up to the cage, and don’t even get me started on trying to pick her up. She wasn’t well handled when she was younger because my parents dont know how to handle guinea pigs and refused to let me do the right thing.

Anyway, yesterday she started acting really weird. She backed into the corner of her cage lays there. She only moves to stretch out and nibble at food, and will only finish something if it’s placed directly in front of her. And this is weird, because, to be honest, she’s a bit chubby. She LOVES food just like any other piggy. Probably even a bit more knowing her though. What’s weirder, is that she lets me touch her. She hates being touched. And when I pet her she just stares at me. And I’ve noticed that her breathing seems a tad bit slower then usual.

Does anyone have an explanation?

She might be sick. If what you described is opposite of her usual behaviour, she might be feeling something. You should take her to the vet to know what is wrong with her that caused a change on her behaviour.

It does sound like she could be unwell, as it's a big change from her normal behavior. Unfortunately there is no way for us to diagnose her over the internet. She would need to be assessed by a vet for any kind of conclusive diagnosis. Most vague symptoms, like lethargy and lack of appetite, are common across a lot of illnesses. If she is not eating normally, you may need to syringe her food to keep her system going while you figure out the underlying problem. There is a sticky post about how to syringe feed at the top of the page that may help. Lots of luck to you and your piggie!

Welcome to the forum and sorry that it's because your piggy is not well. She definitely needs to see a vet to find out what's going on as she doesn't sound well. We have a vet list (not comprehensive) on this forum but it covers the UK. If you are in the US then guinea lynx has a good list ordered by state. If you are elsewhere please do post your location as we have members from across the world and if we have members in your country they may be able to provide guidance.
I would start weighing her daily to check for weight loss as that is usually the first indicator of illness and step in with syringe feeding if she is not eating enough on her own.
