Hi,

My Name is Sam and my guinea pig is sick.

My Guinea pig is called Fudge.

The problem is I got home from work last night and Fudge was laid flat out on the grass not moving.
We picked her up and put her back in the cage but when she went down the ladder she looked like she was having a fit - it was horrible.

I have since put Fudge into a big plastic box with Towels and food/water.

Over night she has moved to the other end of the box and looks to be still pooing and weeing normally but not really moving at all.

Normally Fudge does not like to be touched and would run and squeak as soon as you got anywhere near it!

Fudge is keeping her neck tilted but not any particular way. she does not seem to have had any more fits since I have put her inside the house in a box.

Is there any advice anyone can give me untill I can get her to the vets on Monday??8...

Some vets are open Saturdays, I was there today. You could also call the emergency vet?

I do hope fudge is ok, is she still eating?

you could always ring your vets anyway if you are worried as they all usuly offer out of hours if they are not open

Yes She did eat a little last night I called the vets but they said they close at one and I'm at work untill 4pm and have just started a new job so dont have much money hence having to wait till monday.

Just wondered if there is anything I can do to get her through the weekend as the vets were very rude and said they wont tell me anything till they see her on Monday.

Keep your piggy as quiet, dark, warm and cosy as possible. It sounds like Fudge had a stroke. Many guinea pigs do recover over time.

Please make sure that she eats and drinks. If necessary weigh her daily to keep track of any possible major weight loss.

Here is what Peter Gurney writes about strokes (and you are doing he right thing!): http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/strokes.htm

I hope that helps you!

It will cost you an arm and a leg to take an animal to the vets at the weekend. £91, last time I took mine and he didn't do anything other then say my pig was having an allegic reaction (he died of heart failure). Make sure if you go to a vet at the weekend you get a decent one that knows about pigs and that your satisfired with the medicine and treatment before paying. Otherwise wait till Monday. Vets that are open on Saturdays are usually shut by 1pm. vets for pets are open on Saturdays. x

All better!

Thank you to everyone who responded after the weekend Fudge seemed fine and we have put her back outside with the others.

I really did appreciate the help and advice, thank you all so much!xx>>>

I am glad that Fudge is better.

Most vets have an out of numbers phone number on their answering machines. It is good to check whether yours do or find out whether there is to go in an emergency; out of hours visits are usually very expensive but they can make the difference between life and death, and it is not something you want to have to work out when you are in a panic!

Our out of hours charges £125, thats before any other charges. and its about 40 minutes away. Not something I would use unless desperate.
