Hi, my male guinea pig Winnie has choked 2 time within the last week. Which is 2 times too many for me and 2 heart attacks. And i want to prevent this ASAP. Each time he starts choking, it’s always right after he grooms himself so i’m assuming he keeps choking on his fur balls. How do i prevent this?

Hi!

Unlike other pet, guinea pigs don't suffer from bezoars (fur balls).

Could you please take a video so we can see what is actually going on? Since your interpretation of what is happening is all we have to go by, we can unfortunately not help you properly by playing wild guessing games without having some kind of access to make our own assessment.

Please upload any video elsewhere on a public setting and then copy across. We are a forum that runs on voluntary member donations which don't stretch far enough for the extra band width cost for running a video upload facility on the forum would require.

Thank you for your input. Well it’s not necessarily a hair ball i guess. That was a poor description because no actual hair ball comes up. but definitely some of his fur gets caught in his throat sometimes after he grooms himself. i’ll try and catch a video if it happens again. But it’s basically just a choking sound like something is caught in his throat and he trusts his body a little trying to get it out. eventually it gets out after 5-10 seconds and breathing is perfectly normal afterwards too and everything

It’s not likely that fur is getting stuck in his throat. I would get him seen by the vet just to be on the safe side.
