sorry I can't help with this. But I just wanted to wish you both well and send get well wishes.
So sorry you are going through this, it is horrible when you have no idea what is wrong.

Thanks Hank288! Just needing answers at the moment! They've made him an appointment at a different vets this evening so they may know more, otherwise he's going to the cat and rabbit vet in Northampton on Monday - just concerned that with his weight loss that he may not be okay till then :(

Hang in there, keep up the feeding. Wonder if you could get an earlier appointment with Simon ?

I did wonder that... I'm going to see what the vet says this evening and see what they can do. He has, on occasion been picking up food and dropping it which is a sign that his teeth are still causing him problems :(

I'm giving 40ml of thick critical care a day, is this enough?

Is he maintaining his weight, weighing him daily, that’s the best way to tell. The tiniest little spike on their teeth can put them completely off eating. My Ted had trouble eating and he had a GA dental at local vets and ended up worse than before the opp. I hand fed him and gave Critical Care for around 6 weeks until I went on the forum and found out about Simon. Took him there and he was eating hay within 10 minutes after conscious dental. Good luck with your boy, hang in there x

Still not eating today and he squeaked a couple of times when going to the toilet, so have taken him to the local vets that I’ve been to before, they’ve taken him in for an X-ray but no stones. Completely at a loss of what to do and they’ve said that they don’t know what else to do!

Is there blood in his urine? I had a pig that did not show stones on an X-ray but had all the other signs of stones. They ended up irrigating his urethra and bladder and three small stones came out. Did they send off for a urine culture? Could also be an infection? Just some thoughts for you. Stay strong!

Thanks all for your support! I took him to a different vets last night and they found blood in his mouth and were quite concerned about an abscess so kept him him overnight and operated this morning - his teeth were also in pretty bad shape and quite spiky... not sure what the other vets did to him!
He has woken up and is recovering nicely but the vet has said that he's got a dental disease where his teeth won't grow properly so needs to be managed with diet and painkillers... I do wonder if it's worth taking him to Simon to see if he can advise differently or would that just stress him out more?

Poor dude. Sounds like he needs some time to recover first to me. Glad they found out what’s wrong

Thanks Shannon! That's what I'm thinking, I'll see how he is tonight and the next few days - hopefully he'll start eating again! :)

Don’t cancel your appointment with Simon see what he’s like Sunday evening/Monday morning if your appointment isn’t till late afternoon as it’s a very busy vets and I’m sure they’ll fill it if you feel you need to cancel x personally I would still take him x
Good luck with your poppet x

I've never been to see Simon or Kim but have heard great things about them. I wouldn't cancel the appointment with them I'd still keep it and take your piggie along. Good luck with him. I'm sure he'll be OK with all the TLC you are giving him. Keep us informed about him.

Definitely still go to Simon. He gets amazing results, even with those where other vets have said nothing more can be done. One of our piggies stopped eating about 6 weeks ago. His teeth were a mess and very overgrown. Simon has completely cured his dental issue, in just two dentals. He was checked today and teeth are now completely normal.

i would echo the other posters. Jerry my dental piggie ,the original vet wanted to put him to sleep.i got a second opinion from Simon ,Jerry ate for himself after 3 dentals !Simon really is the best for dentals.

Jus caught up on this. Going to see simon is a must basicly. You dont want to be managing dental issues for years if you have a great chance of having you pig cured. The managing will be stressing him out.

I did think the other vet you used, dived in without knowing whats going on. Shouldnt be allowed. I know i wouldnt want to go to a dentist who doesnt know what they are doing😦. All the best 👍

Definitely still go and see Simon, you could always try and get in on Saturday if they have any space if you’re worried about his weight. If it’s dental, he’s definitely your man! I was feeding Chunk 20ml 3-4 times a day, just try and feed as much as he will take at this point if you are worried he is dropping weight. Good luck and hope you can get answers 😊

Saying his dental disease needs to be managed with diet and painkillers is really not a solution or acceptable. All our dental piggies, here at TEAS, get to a point where they eat completely normally and the only management they might need, is a quick tidy up of the teeth, that is undertaken without GA, from time to time. None of them are left only able to eat softened foods or reliant on syringe food, or painkillers! They eat and behave like any normal guinea pig.

That does help, thank you! Was quite worried about the prognosis. Will call Simon and Kim and see if he can be seen tomorrow. Looking at him, I think he’s had his incisors cut too short - really wish vets wouldn’t assume they know what they’re doing and then charge a fortune for it. I feel like they put me in a bad position by saying he probably wouldn’t survive much longer the way he was :-( thanks all for your advice, will keep you updated.

It's so upsetting and frustrating when vets are taking lots of money from people, when they haven't got the knowledge to give good treatment. There is no shame in saying this isn't something I have experience in, but sadly so many won't do that! I really hope you can get to see Simon soon. I think tomorrow will be fully booked, but you can give it a try xx

This is exactly what happened to my Ted, incisor cut so short they didn’t meet in the middle! He had his appetite but could not pick anything up or it kept dropping out of his mouth. When Simon saw his teeth 6 weeks later he did say the first vet had made a mess. Chunks incisors will grow back and balance out as long as the back teeth have no spikes, that’s why it’s best that Simon takes look and can file down any uneven areas that is stopping him from eating too x Hang in there Chunk and hug to you x
