Hello

Gi Gi has been on baytril now for 6 days and is due to go back for check up on the 10th day. I have worried myself now over some posts about side effects of this AB, and about how a Probiotic should be given. However I didn't know this until now, should I be worried at this point? He is still VERY active as always, and cheeky. Eats like a horse and always squeaking for more. I am a little bit worried as his poops are mostly normal in shape and size, but some are small like half the size. Is this normal on baytril? Should I be worried about this? He was put on this as the vet thought it might be the start of URI but I got him in so fast I'm not sure now if it was just a hay poke as only one of his eyes was watering and it got better when I got back. He still has a wet nose but is a lil bit of moisture okay? As he has always had this from the moment I got him :( I don't want to be putting something in to my piggy if it will harm him :/

Hi you, It's okay don't worry. We have never ever had a problem with Baytril, it can occasionally put them off the food and as you have noticed alter the poops a little. What dose are they on?
Start the Probiotic when you get it but give it at a separate time to the AB. In the meantime, you could give some poo soup.. Its the poo of a healthy piggie mixed with around 2ml of water and syringe fed, piggies love it and it is full of good bacteria from the other piggie.

Your piggie sounds like he is fine with Baytril and getting better, lots of healing vibes to them x

Hello thanks for the reply! And no problem with food as of yet touch wood, just keeping watch like a hawk so the change in his toilet habits have put me on edge haha coupled with making myself worry :( He has no cage mate right now, as I did contact my local rescue about a young piggy to have but he came down with this so I thought it best not to :( such a cute thing he was too! I am getting him insured after this so I will be sure to ask about a probiotic, he is on 1ml for 10 days and that's 2.5%, is that a normal dose? and thank you :)

1ml? or 0.1ml? What does he weigh?

Normally Baytril 2.5% doses is 0.2ml - 0.4ml twice a day. 1ml is high. I would think about splitting the dose but definitely have a word with your vet tomorrow about the dosage.

The highest we had was 0.4ml twice a day for 7 days

I have no idea what he weighs, I know I should weigh him but I can't find anything suitable. But it says 1ml once everyday out of 10ml amount he gave me. If that's a high dose I am calling them tomorrow, unless his weight has anything to do with it. Strange :S

Minky has been on 1ml Baytril a day for about 6 weeks now because of her head tilt. I give her 0.5ml roughly at 8am & 8pm & she's had no side effects other than her head tilt improving a lot. Not quite there yet but it can be a long haul with head tilts. I wouldn't worry unless Gi Gi loses appetite or weight. I always have a tube of Fibreplex in the medicine cabinet. You can buy this without a prescription from Vet UK. Any of my piggies that lose their appetite are normally back eating after just 1 notch of the spindle. Not certain what amount that is but you can give up to 6 doses over 2 days.

Ahh well that puts me at peace a lot more thanks both! And I hope your piggy gets better! :) What is fibreplex exactly and can you recommend a reliable source please? :) Or sources haha
