My 1 year old Guinea Pig had pneumonia last week. He was poorly and had to stay over night at the weeks and had 5 days of anti biotics - any one have any idea how much this is likey to cost me? Vets are taking ages writing up the bill!

(apologies if this in the wrong part of the forum!)

I had a pig who had surgery and was in for 3 days. That was £80 4 years ago. That included the stayover, surgery, anaesthetic and medication.

Hi, welcome. The mods may move this to the health and illness thread where more advice could be available.
There could be a charge of around £15 for initial consultation, an overnight stay shouldn't cost too much, as there could well have been no one there anyway? Maybe just didn't want to move him? Five days of anti biotics are not usually too expensive, when we bring them home to give. The vet shouldn't really be taking any time at all to write up the bill, it's normal stuff for them.
Sorry that was a very vague answer, there are more people here, who I am sure can help, and I hope your piggy gets better soon.
xx

I am soooooo relieved he is okay. It was so horrible seeing him sooo poorly. I think he had to stay overnight so they could keep an eye on him, and the vet also mentioned putting him for an hour in an oxygen tank to help him breathe. Poor little thing. Am a bit annoyed with the time it's taking the vets to send the bill though, which is why i'd thought id ask some advice! Thanks for all the advice!

Welcome to the forum. :)

I am pleased your piggie is okay now. Pneumonia is a nasty illness, I had a sow who had it two years ago; she almost didn't make it. Her treatment - including three consultations, diuretic injections (which I have no doubt saved her life) and antibiotics was around £60. I think if you prepare yourself for around £100, then you'll be pleasantly surprised if it is less, and not too shocked if it does reach that price!

Welcome to the forum!

I just wanted to say that I'm pleased that your piggy is better; I can't add anything to the cost side. Would it help if you rang up the vets and said that it was important for you that you could budget for the probable cost of the treatment?

Hiya and welcome to the forum.

I had a piggy with pneumonia that didn't make it so very pleased that yours did. It's nasty for them bless them.

Our total treatment bill was £40 with no overnight stay - that included consultations, saline, antibiotic injections, critical care and steroid injection. I know vets bills can vary wildly so I would say the £100 estimate sounds like a good figure to concentrate on and then take it from there?

Let us know wont you it's quite interesting to find out.
