Hemel

Hello,

My name is Hemel, and I am seriously thinking about looking after some piggies!

I am currently at research stage. I heard that there is a Guinea Pig Show in Banstead / Epsom this weekend (what luck) is anyone going, what should I expect?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Perhaps I could suggest you research into rescues in your area that may have some piggies available.
As a pro rescue forum we don't generally discuss showing and breeding of guinea pigs, so unlikely your question will be answered.
However, the forum here is absolutely chokka with info, and if you can't find what you're looking for, just put up a post and I'm sure someone will be able to help out.
A good place to start is the Rescue and Rehoming section.
Welcome to the forum, have fun. x

Hi, welcome to the forum!

As Jane has said, we don't discuss showing here, but I hope that you will enjoy exploring the rest of the forum :)

Thanks Nutmeg for the quick response.

I'm only going to the show to see if my niece would like to have a guinea pig (i want it to be her pet (but actually mine as well)...

Really just going for the experience. If I did buy a Guinea Pig it would be from the rehoming / rescue centres.

It's great when we buy ourselves guinea pigs under the pretext that they are for the kids. Perhaps you could find a rescue close by that will let you take your niece along to see how she interracts with the guineas.
Guineas are pack animals though, and like to live with their own kind, so perhaps either look for a bonded pair of boys, or a pair of girls, so they have a pal to play with. xx

Hiya!

I found that rescues are the best place to get guinea pigs that suit your individual situation.

Here is the link to rescue website this forum is connected to; it also contains a list of rescues. http://www.guineapigrehome.org.uk

You can always ring up your nearest rescue and ask whether you could come for a trial visit.

Here is a thread that you might find useful if you want to keep guinea pigs.

Yes you may see piggies at a show but you will also probably see some very unhappy/depressed piggies too!
These piggies are groomed and poked and prodded to perfection, some are not allowed to enjoy luxurys such as grass which every piggy should experience, they get to sit in cages all day waiting for yet another person to judge them with no escape from all the scary humans,
Pigs shouldnt be judged they are all gorgeous in there own way and the best way to demonstrate that is to post pics on here for all the non judgmental piggy lovers to see, going to a show is supporting the bad treatment.

Thanks.

I'll take a look at at the other parts to this forum and the link.

i am so niave i never even knew that there was such a thing as piggie shows!i know you have dog and cat shows but guinea pig shows!
anyway a more productive thing for me to say would be to tell you that i got my 2 pigs from a rescue and they are so lovely and i cant recommend enough getting them from rescues the rehoming section on here has some lovely pigs up for adoption

i completely agree i now have 8 from rescue and they are just gorgeous!

you're addicted Bonnie, though... :)):)):))

I admit (hang my head in shame), I went to a show once, by chance and I didn't like it at all. People were very much up their own back sides talking about coats and colours, etc.... the animals looked sad and lonely, standing in their pee and their tiny cages had nothing comfy in them, some had food and water, others didn't, you had to be a paying member to buy a 'pedigree' baby (they were cute tho) but most importantly, the owners weren't particularly likeable. This woman started to prep her peru, she got it out of the cage, put it on her lap (or the floor) and started to brush its coat so vigorously that the terrified animal started to squeal...

That was the natural impression I got well before discovering this forum. Animal showing is as wrong as beauty contests, excet animals don't get a say. :(

As Bonnie (KingBoris) and MrsM have explained, this is why we request that chat about breeding and showing is kept to other forums :) Thanks.
