RayniasPiggies

I have owned two female guinea pigs in the past. Both had tufts of medium length hair. And both were quite small. They both received lots of dry food, hay, and veggies. So I know they weren't malnourished. And both lived to be about six years old.

Now I adopted two males, and they are so much larger in size! One has long hair, and the other semi-long. I have seen other full-grown piggies this size, so I know it's quite common. And the funny part is, the previous owner didn't even feed them veggies (sad I know, but thankfully he had them only 3 months rather than all their lives) and gave very little hay, since the bag of hay was empty when I got there.

I was curious to know, do males get bigger? Or does it just depend on the individual piggy?

I would say on the whole boars are bigger than sows but this is not always the case. There are large sows as there are small boars :)

I see, so I suppose it depends on the piggy itself rather than the gender. I also noticed their previous owner gave them the dry food with the seeds mixed into it. I understand that this can be fattening for them. *sighs* This person knew nothing about guinea pigs I'm afraid.

Cinder and Flame were both got from the same place at approx the same age and there is a difference in look and weight between them, at 7 mths cinder is approaching the 1kg mark, and flame is floating at around 820g
Although saying that they were in a group of three and I noticed flame eating but using his energy to get the food and then go away with it again.

I have one of each Coco the female weighs 2lb 5oz but smudgie the male is 2lb 12 1/2oz So he is definately bigger. They are from the same litter and will be 1 year old next month.

Funny, you should say that, Daisy is the skinnier one and she grabs food and runs away to eat it but Blossom who weighs 1300g sits at the bowl and eats.

Mine do the same, Ozzy is the bigger and he will sit and eat happily at the bowl but Marley grabs and runs!

I always think my boar is the size of a netherland dwarf rabbit he is that big!

With regards to all sizes... i had an abysinian and she ate like a horse but was never chubby and my normal shorthaired ones now are very chunky piggies...

i think sometimes it can be down to breeding maybe?

Hmm, I haven't weighed them yet. That would be interesting. I can tell Axel, the long-haired one, is bigger than Reno. I also noticed that Axel will hog the veggies sometimes, so I will try to hand-feed them to him outside the cage while Reno eats inside. That way I know Reno is getting his share. I wonder if that means Axel is the dominant one. He certainly is the character of the pair. He is constantly tipping over the food dishes (which I plan to remedy with ceramic bowls). And he likes to turn the igloo around in circles while inside. It cracks me up watching him. :)) Reno is more timid, and hides from me a lot. But he really is a sweetie once I get him out of the cage.
