Guinea Pig Very Poorly

Glad you were able to see Simon, hopefully it is just an infection and the Septrin will clear it up.

Storm one of our boars was awake for xrays, he was taken into the vets again due to pain, xrayed and found he has kidney and bladder stones, he tends to only squeak when he poo's, he's on painkillers but we've been told (my son and I) that he can't be helped unless the kidney stone passes. He's eating and drinking well though.

I'm really sorry to hear about your guinea :( It's a shame you can't find someone to do the xray while he's awake, there are ways.

:D So glad that you were able to get Simon to see Sam. Now he has a much better chance of a full recovery. @Gem789 how is the little fella doing today?

Yes and me, he's a brilliant vet.Sam is still in pain and just hiding in his house bless him.I'm still keeping his weight up with the syringe feeding and he will eat the odd bit of parsley. How long should I wait for the antibiotics to work( for suspected cystitis) cos I read online if they're still in pain after 2 days then to take them back to the vet, is that right?

Simon at the cat and rabbit clinic in Northampton said he will X-ray him if there's no improvement but I don't imagine he will keep still so will probably have to use some gas and sorry to hear about storm, I hope the kidney stone does pass x

:hmm: I'm no expert on these things, but I believe that the anti-biotics can take a few hours to kick in. Keep giving the Septrin as Simon directed. Cystitis is usually fairly easy to clear up. How are his wee's and poops?

I did notice some blood in his wee today but don't know whether that was because of his examination yesterday cos it's the 1st time there's been blood and his poos are still very tiny and he's not doing loads like usual :).Ill see if he's any better tomorrow and if not I'll try and get another appointment

Thank you @Gem789 we have another guinea, Jericho (lol we have 10 in total including a dog and a mouse) he had cystitis last Summer, tried three or four times to get rid of it with antibiotics, it turned out that it may have been interstitial cystitis which you don't treat with antibiotics (that's what I was told at least), he was then moved on to cystophan and kept on painkillers, he seems much better now, just crossing my fingers it doesn't come back and yeah antibiotics can take a couple of days or more to kick in properly.

I hope your guinea starts to improve. It can take time, my adult son has been nursing Cesaro, hand feeding/watering him every three hours, antibiotics etc. (nasty intestinal parasite) he's slowly getting better and putting weight back on :) I'm just glad the vet knew what she was doing.

Thanks, I'm really hoping he does too, it's horrible knowing he's in pain and I'm glad the other 2 Guinea pigs of yours seem to be doing better

@Gem789 How is Sam doing today? Any better?

Hi, he seems a bit worse today, being very difficult when syringe feeding him and not taking a lot and he doesn't want any parsley whereas he'll usually eat a bit.Hes still in pain so I don't know whether to ring the vets and ask about carrying on with the antibiotics because I thought I would've seen some improvement by now.I'm more worried today than i have been the last couple of days.I don't want the vets to think I'm being overprotective for ringing up after only 2 days though.

:hmm:If you are that worried, then do get him down to Simon again. He will not think any less of you for bringing him back so soon. It only shows how attentive you are, and how much you care. You know Sam better than anyone.

Yes you're right, I will ring in a little while and see if I can get him seen although I hear it's very hard to get an appointment there so fingers crossed I can get him in this week.

:tu: Good luck with your appointment.

I've held off ringing the vets for now cos my mum helped me feed Sam earlier and he actually ate some pepper, cucumber and celery plus a bit of his syringe feed. Its weird, perhaps he likes my mum more than me lol so was more willing to eat

Oh .... it's a horrible time when you are waiting for news like this. Fingers firmly crossed for him.

have you tried babyfood?(just make sure its purple vegetables, no meat no dairy) this may help with the weight issue

yes, which is why I used it when my girl got cancer and was losing weight, I also use it as a rare treat for the others. just get a syringe with no needle and feed it. or you could blend apples and bananas and feed the same way which mine also love x

Ok thanks I think I will try that, I used to blend fruit for my old pig bill when he stopped eating and he seemed to like it

Just got a call from Simon, they couldn't find any bladder stones from the X-ray and they flushed his bladder out and that seemed fine but he's got really bad arthritis in his back legs and also his feet are really sore which has been an ongoing problem so Simon is gonna give me a months worth of metacam and he recommended something called vet bed to help with sams feet.Has anyone else had a piggie with arthritis? Just wondered if the metacam will help?

Ah that sounds good regarding the bladder :)
Vetbed is lovely and soft on their feet, and it's cushiony so will absorb some of the impact as they walk around, so I think it's well worth the investment. There's Vetbed and Profleece, and both brands are good. :) Just cut your pieces a little larger than the cage floor as sometimes it can shrink a little the first few times you wash it.
I am sorry, I can't help you on the arthritis itself, apart from saying that vetbed would help her to go easy on her feet and joints. x

Sams a boy lol and ok I am gonna try pets at home later on and see if they have it in store.I'm very glad there's no bladder stones but feel very sorry for him with his painful legs and feet.I'm just hoping the metacam will help.
