Could anyone recommend a good piggy vet near to me please ? One that can do dental work if needed without using anaesthetic.

I live in Witham, Essex

Have a look at our Recommended vets locator http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/locator/vets.html Type in your postcode and it will pop up your nearest recommended vet, give them a ring and see if they can help.

Welcome to the forum by the way. Has your piggy been having dental issues long?

If you can get to Vets and Pets in Broxbourne, Amir the vet does conscious dentals. It is literally just over the border from Essex though am not sure on where that would be in relation to where you are.

Thank you, I had already looked at that link but i was just hoping someone would no of another vet even more closer to me.
I don't no if it is a dental problem with my boy but just incase it is I didn't want him to have any anaesthetic unless really necessary. He is eating quite well but I think he seems to be chewing things for a long time and he has lost a bit of weight and so needs to be checked out.

I know they are further away, but can definitely be highly recommended on the forum. Hope you can get to the bottom of what is wrong with your little one. What is his name?

If you can get to Broxbourne then there is also a monthly guinea pig clinic, the next one is on 23 November though it sounds like your pig will need to be seen before then. If you call the vets though they should be able to give you the number of the lady that runs it and you could go from there. Any dental work needed would be done by the vet.

Broxbourne is quite a way from Witham.

I'm local to you, and I have spent years trying to find good vets! Unfortunately, there aren't really any particularly great ones. Feel free to PM me for all my local vet experiences, and I'd be interested to hear yours.

It's well worth travelling to a find a vet that really knows what they are doing.

We have recently learnt the very hard and very expensive way the difference between a really good exotic vet and an ordinary 'cat and dog' vet that sees guinea pigs aswell.

We now travel about an hour to see our new vet, but it is worth it. That said, they do open until 8 and on Sundays, so we can get there after work if needed.

I managed to get Liquorice to the Broxbourne vets, I don't drive and so have to persuade other half to take me. Unfortunately the vet couldn't really find anything wrong :-( He had a good feel of his body, checked temperature, teeth etc but all was fine. I've been given lots of medication for Liquorice to see if he improves otherwise we will have to go back to investigate further :-(

He is very quiet, hunched up with a fluffed up coat, he is eating a bit on his own but not enough, he seems to chew for ages before eating the next thing, he lost a bit of weight but I have managed to keep his weight stable at the moment through helping him feed and syringe feeding. He seems to eat more when I pass him bits of food or hold veg while he bites a piece off, he is fine chewing hard food. I hate seeing him like this, it's so sad and frustrating not knowing what is wrong :-(

Was it Amir you saw? Do you know what he gave you? Was Loxicom one if the medications?

Can you smell the breath of your pig please? Does it smell of damp dishcloths at all? If so it could be oral thrush. The other possible problem is tooth root issues.

Yes we saw Amir, we have Loxicom, Septrin, a herb mix and protexin.

Amir had a smell of him and had a good look in his mouth so I guess he didn't think it could be oral thrush. How can you tell if it is tooth root issues please ?

An xray would show any issues with roots, we had this done for one of our first piggies.

I'd be tempted to treat with some Daktarin oral gel anyway to see if there is any immediate improvement.

What a worry for you.

I agree it would be a good idea to start the Daktarin oral gel as oral thrush tracks up from the gullet so may be more in the throat. The dose is 0.5ml twice a day and the course is 3 weeks. You need to buy it over the counter in the pharmacy.

Amir likes using herbs but he gets some good results with them.

Yes tooth root issues can show up on xray, Amir does not always go with this theory though but it is a very common problem and is worth mentioning. You can feel ridges along the line of the jaw if there are elongated roots.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I will get some daktarin oral gel tomorrow, do you think its ok to use along with all of his other medication he is on ?

Apart from using the tool to look in Liquorice's mouth Amir stuck his finger in Liquorice's mouth to feel his teeth.

Since starting his medication Liquorice seems keener to eat and is helping himself to some pieces of dried food out of a bowl.

Yes it is fine to use alongside, I have done so with no problems. It's good that he seems to want to eat more, I would think that would mean the pain relief (Loxicom) is helping. Did he say why he gave Septrin? did he think there may be an infection?

Does he seem to move food around in his mouth at all?

How is his weight at the moment and how much has he lost over what period?

I think Amir just gave us everything he could to try and help Liquorice as he couldn't find anything obviously wrong with him.

Liquorice is chewing his food much better now, he munches away quite quick again but mainly only with my help.

Liquorice had lost about 200g over the past month and so far I have only been able to keep him the same weight, I haven't been able to get any weight back on him yet.
