Hello is there anyone that can advise me please?. Dolly was taken to the vets Monday with a suspected stomach bug, she has been given 0.32ml of baytril. She hasn't picked up at all and stays away from my other piggies. She did manage a dandelion leaf yesterday and I'm giving her fluids but she is not herself, does anyone have any comments about this. Does she require another trip to the vets. Thank you.

Hi! Please start topping up any guinea pig that is not eating properly ASAP; the guts will otherwise slow down and stop working altogether rather quickly. Up to 80% of the daily food intake should be hay, which you cannot control anyway - but fibre is what a guinea pig lives on and what it absolutely needs to re-balance the guts again! If your girl has been experiencing diarrhea, please take her off any fresh food until the poos have firmed up again.
Switch to weighing any guinea pig that is not eating properly once daily at the same time instead of the usual weekly weigh-in in order to monitor the food intake.
Our step-by-step syringe feeding guide also has got tips on what you can do with what you have got at home or easily available in an emergency: Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

What were your girl's symptoms that let to a diagnosis of a stomach bug? How piggy savvy is your vet?
Please be aware that baytril is an additional appetite dampener/killer, as it works as much on the bacteria that are vital for the digestive process as on any "bad" bacteria. Please give a pinch of probiotic 1-2 hours after the antibiotic. You can also support the gut by syringing water in which you have soaked fresh poos from a healthy guinea pig to re-stock the guts with the "right" stuff. This mimics natural behaviour from recovering guinea pigs.

As we have members and enquiries from all over the world, you can help us tailor any advice to what is relevant and available where you are by adding your country, state/province or UK county to your details, so we can help you most efficiently instead of having to keep any advice as general as possible. Climate, brand names and products, vet and rescue access vary widely across the world. Click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. Thank you!

A stomach bug was diagnosed as she had developed very quickly a dirty crusty bum and her poo was soft and gooey. She was and still is very quiet.

Please syringe feed as much fibre as you can either with recovery food or mushed up pellets, and stay off any fresh veg until the poos have normalised for at least 24-48 hours and your girl is eating satisfactorily on her own. the less you can get in per session, the more often you need to feed round the clock (see the syringe feeding guide for the amounts/frequency needed).

Only then you re-introduce fresh herbs and veg slowly one by one. You can also offer some brown cardboard; guinea pigs with unbalanced guts often crave nutritionally poor, very rough fibre. Your supportive care round the clock is as important as any vet care right now.

Thank you so much for your help it was very kind of you to get back to me.:)

Sorry to hear Daisy is poorly :( Hope she picks up soon and great advice from Wiebke above.

Could you add your location to your profile in case we need to tailor any advice to your location please?

Welcome again and healing vibes to your little girl

Welcome to the forum! I'm sorry it's in this circumstances though.
Hope your girl recovers quickly. And don't forget to keep us updated! x

Dolly is not herself am syringe feeding her tummy care which she is taking very well. Still no sign of her eating solids on her own so I'm feeding mashed pellets.

Hang on in there! I am very sorry that there is no improvement.

Hi and welcome.Sorry you are having to deal with this illness .Everything crossed here for you

Dolly has finished her antibiotics but is still not eating. Have tried her on mashed pellets, blended timothy hay tummy care, still no joy. Still syringe feeding her but that is a struggle she has no interest in any other food. She is quite lively but has no interest in the other girls I have, her weight is 62.6 grammes
HELP WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO MAKE HER EAT.

Hi! I have moved your threads to this section and merged them, so we have got all information together and where it can be seen by our members that specifically monitor this section. Our forum allows you to watch a thread and get updates. (top right above the thread), unlike with other social media. this enables us to tailor any advice and to help you more efficiently.

Please always contact your vets promptly if there is no improvement or use an out-of-hours service as an emeregncy if your girl is deteriorating. She needs to be seen by a good vet as soon as you can get an appointment, as it has obviously not been an infection, but there is certainly something serious going on.

Until then, all you can do is to continue syringe feeding and watering her as much as you can get into her, little but often around the clock.

Has she been back to the vet? Its possible the diarrhoea was a symptom of something else going on such as dental issues. Are her poohs back to normal now?

Dolly is st not herself. She is more lively than a few days ago but she is still not eating on her own. I am still syringe feeding her mashed pellets and am also adding blended timothy hay and tummy care she has no interest in any other food. Am monitoring her weight which now is

I'm so sorry you are having trouble with Dolly, I do hope she pulls through.:(

I am very sorry, but you need to see a vet again as soon as you can, and continue syringe feeding water as best as you can. Your girl may need a scan and a check of her back teeth to get to the bottom of it.

I'm so sorry to hear about dolly. You went above and beyond to help her out.
Popcorn free on the rainbow bridge little girl.Xx
Hugs to you:hug:
