I was attempting to clip my guinea pigs nails for the first time, and one of my guinea pig particularly hates it, so its difficult to carry out. I noticed as he was wriggling about that his butt looks kinda stringy and wet and between his legs theres matted fur (He's a long haired guinea pig). I'm not sure if he needs a butt bath, I'll definitely cut the matted fur out but Its so difficult when he finds being held scary so won't sit still, squeals and attempts to bite you. What should I do in general and how do I make this less traumatic for everyone involved?

Hi!

If you can get somebody else to help you and distract your piggy with food that would help a lot. Using piggy whispering tips to gently assert your authority and plenty of praise and encouragement will also help.

Who is the boss - your guinea pig or you?

It is important you keep long-haired piggies cut short around the bum end and the sides in order to minimise the risk of matting and messing up; especially with boars. If they really hate grooming, then keeping their coats on the shorter side not just during the summer months is highly recommended.

We currently have got a hair cutting guide with plenty of pictures and videos in the making but are not quite there yet.
