Pinky & Perky's Mum

Does anyone know if air fresheners are safe to use around guinea pigs?

Pinky and Perky live in a cage in our living room and I have avoided using any kind of spray air fresheners up until now in case it affects their respiratory systems.
I have bought some Air Wick fragranced candles that I would like to use in the living room but not sure if they are safe for the piggies. It says on the packaging not to use around pets but not sure whether that is because they are harmful to them or whether it means because cats, dogs etc could knock them over and cause a fire. :{

I've looked on the Air Wick website and can't find any further info so wondered if anyone here had any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any replies. :)

hi i generally don't use any of these products,i also have cut out all bench sprays and anything similar i now stick to natural cleaning like bicarb and things similar, but if i have to use anything i make sure my piggies door to there room is always closed and that the window is open.I tend to think if it isnt the best for our bodies then it cant be good for an animal with lungs that small, hope i helped xxxxxxx

You can use essential oils, put some on a cool light bulb, when the light bulb is on it warms up releasing the smell into the air. :)

It will be on one of the old threads here I think it was Maryh who came up with the idea, its going back now though. :)

Please go careful with essential oils. There are very few that are safe to use around the Piggies.

The best way to freshen air is to open a window - unless of course you live on a congested main road! An air purifier might be a better option if you feel you need to clear the air.

A plain, unscented candle burnt for 10 - 20 minutes, and then extinguished can also help to 'clear the air'.

Piggies are pretty sensitive and you need to bear this in mind when adding any sort of 'perfume' to the air that they breathe.

Well I've never had a problem with it. I don't use Airwick or the like because they are full of chemicals. One drop of lavander or eucalyptus on a lightbulb done the trick for us and has never upset our pigs. They are more hardy than we give them credit for. Of course I wouldn't do anything to harm my animals but it just seems sometimes that people treat them so delicately. They are stronger than we give them credit for. I did try to find the old thread but I think it was on the old style forum. :)

I would be careful with candles in all honesty. They are a hazard and easy forgotten about. A neighbours house went up because she lit candles, thank god not much damage was done.

Each to their own though, I'm not trying to be funny but this board is for opinions, I'm just giving mine. :(|)
