Hey there :)p I'm new to the forum. I came here to seek advice on taking my two piggies on an international flight... Correction, one international flight and quick domestic flight. I currently live outside of the USA, but I will be returning in a few months. It would be unbearable if I had to leave my babies behind during the move... 8...

My piggies are currently 7 and 9 weeks old. They will be about 6 months by the time we leave. Would it be too traumatic for them to come with me inside the cabin during the flights? I do not want to harm them, but I do not trust anyone here to take care of my piggies properly if I leave them. This is not a vacation... I will be moving back. Any advice or opinions?

It looks like Delta allows pets in the cabin, and maybe Continental (which allows rabbits, but I would have to contact to make sure)...

I do understand that they would have certain requirements and documents to take the guinea pigs on board. I'll have to look further into those as soon as I can (I hear it is quite a process). :) You guys don't think it would be too bad for the little guys?

I've taken a guinea pig on a long train journey before! He didn't seem to mind. He's very very noisy so kept squeaking though! I think if you put them in a cat carrier, and maybe throw a towel over the top, they should be happy enough in there. You could give them hay to hide in and food to munch away on.

I honesty dont know. :( I hope you get to take them though! :) Can I just ask why you got guinea pigs in the first place when you know you have to move?

I just recently got the news that we were leaving. It upset me to think that I could possibly have to leave my piggies. :(

I actually had to take them home on a 2 hour bus ride! They were very happy to be on solid ground again! Thank you for the advice (:

Mine travelled fine on the train home for three hours, and my older two did fine on a 9 hour car journey, although one was a bit 'off' for days after, we thought he was going to die! However I'm not sure about the plane, would the pressue be too much for a guinea pigs delicate system?

I do hope you can take them with you!

Mine go on 4 hour bus rides fairly regularly and do fine!

Not all companies allow them to travel in the cabin, but for those who do you would need one of those lower carriers that could be stowed under the seat in front of you, not a regular cat carrier. Like one of these.

That's what I was worried about... I don't want to harm them by taking them with me, but I also don't want to leave them with someone that will not take care of them. It's so hard!

Thank you guys for your help. :) I'll have to think long and hard about it. I just hope I do what is best for them.

Personally I think it's definitely not a good idea and kindest for them not to take them on a plane for all sorts of reasons. :(:{

Though I can fully understand that you want them to be looked after properly, if it was me, I'd not even consider putting them through something so stressful.

I'm sure if you shared your location you'd find someone on here that would be willing to look after them for you while you're gone - and keep in touch with you on how they are.

The question is of course, how long will the be in transit for? A few hours might be fine, longer and you would need to really think about it. Many animals fly round the world and are fine but you will have to do a lot of research. We left our piggies in the states when we came back to the uk but to be honest I think we all regreted it afterwards as we had to leave them with people who we didn't really trust.
It totally depends on the situation because for the guineas we left in the states the best thing for them would in the long term be for them to have come with us. The guineas we had to leave in the uk when we went to the states in the first place were definatly best off staying with my friend who looked after them very well and Fuzz lived with her until he was seven.

I have never had any experience in this feild but if you give them alot of hay and food to munch on they could be alright. I really hope you could take them with you I know what it would be like to leave ")

I seem to remember a while back that there was a post which said guinea pigs were banned in some USA states, so it may be worth checking that you can take them where you want to go to.

The trip would be veryy long for them... Longer than just a few hours. We usually fly out very early in the morning (leaving around 5am) and get home late afternoon. I see what you are saying. I know I would leave them here if it was only for a short term, but since we aren't returning, I am wondering if it would be better for them in the long run even if they got a little oozy for a few days.

I heard about that! There is no ban on guinea pigs in my state though... Thank God :) I would die.

After reading everyone's answers, I am going to try and find someone who will look after them for me. I really don't want to risk it. :... They are not used to travelling, and this could be too overwhelming for them.

If anyone here lives in Latin America and would be willing to take my piggies, please let me know. Thank you all so much :)
