Guinea Pigs With Hay Fever

3 of my girls have hay fever and i was wondering if there is anything i can give them to help? They keep wheezing for a while before they cough and are then fine again, but its horrible to listen to. They live in my bedroom so they aren't to bad but they are getting worse agian now were getting to summer. I really want to know if they are any herbal things that would help please? thanks
 
This is what we suspect my guinea pig Matthew has and the two vets also agree (took him yesterday) so we are currently testing him for a week on Piriton syrup.

I'd suggest you take him to the vet first and foremost. If its not this Matthew will be going through some other tests to rule out things at the vets again.
 
My Sophie has hay fever but the vet said she cannot take anything for it. My rabbit has hay fever too.
 
Took one of them to the vet about 6 months ago because i was rather worried about it. Hadn't heard of them getting hay fever before myself, so was abit concerned the vet was making it up lol. But they all have been wheezing and coughing for about a year now, so it must be true, also i didn'tnotice them doing really over the winter months.
 
Piggies can have allergies and the usual human kids remedies, like piriton, are recommended. Not sure how you can identify the allergen in piggies (obviously a skin test isn't going to happen!). It could be pollen, but may also be washing powder, air freshener, bedding etc. It may be worth trying to isolate exactly what is causing the problem by introducing likely candidates one at a time.
 
I've also never heard of piggies getting hay fever & 3 getting it would be extremely unlikely. Is your vet on the vet locator at top of page. Just type your post code in & it will give you details of the nearest recommended vets so that you can get a piggy savvy vet to look at them. I agree with Elwickcavies & think it may be more likely washing powder or air freshener but it could be something more serious so definitely needs investigating.
 
Dusty suffers with asthma when he gets stressed and the dust from having her teeth burred makes Daisy wheezy. We give them homeopet nose drops and put a couple of drops of olbas oil on a cloth near the cage. This is only after both pigs saw the vet and respiratory infection was ruled out
 
I agree I have a allergy pig and I have 34 and my vet has said highly unlikely to get two out of 34. Could be environmental, could be hay, I would get them checked over by a vet to be safe :)
 
Well it is mum and her 2daughters so guess it must run in the family. Also it does makesense its hay fever really with it been worse in the summer. Wouldn't of thought it was anything more serious because they are all happy and heathly and they must of had it for about a year and a half and the daughters are only 2 years. Thankyou for all your thoughts.
