Hello. I'm new here! I have a piggy who I think has mites. We've had another pig with mites that we treated with neem oil successfully. This was a while ago so I don't think the cases are linked.
I've treated Zen (he's not at all Zen!) with Neem oil a couple of times recently and he's not getting any better. His skin is dandruffy and sore and his hair is coming out.
He looks terrible and I feel awful that he's in discomfort. He's still eating pretty well but obviously isn't himself. I ususally take my piggies to Chris and Titch in Hastings but I can't get hold of them.

I've taken pigs to vets before and they haven't been any help.

Does anyone have any advice please?

I'm in Brighton, East Sussex.

Thanks so much

Zoe xx

With mites there are different types and they are treated differently. Only a vet can determine which ones they are but it sounds like your vet is not knowledgeable in piggies. Have you tried the vet locater to see your nearest? It is at the top of the page.

Hi Zoe,

Welcome to the forum :)

I have pointed a few knowledgeable members your way. You do need to seek a vet and find out if it is mites or fungal. The vet will be able to prescribe drugs either way to get it sorted. Xeno 450 is often used for mites. But a correct diagnosis is needed. He will probably need some pain relief also

Worth getting in touch with your local piggie bank rescue and seeing which vets they use http://www.lumpylodge.co.uk/3.html Lumpy Lodge Rabbit and Guinea Pig Rescue

Lots of healing vibes to your piggie

Hi is it possible to post a photo of your pigs' hair? Does the hair look broken half way down the shaft? If it does turn out to be mites it needs to be treated with Ivermectin ideally by injection or orally at the vets and depending on the type of mites with baths too.

If it is fungal, then this would need to be treated with baths and Imaverol dips. There are also oral fungal meds for advanced cases. The fact that the hair is coming out and is dandruffy makes me think that it is likely to be fungal and if so the hair may also look greasy. Like mites there are also lots of types of fungal.

It is also possible for a pig that is run down to get both a mites and fungal problem at the same time.

If you could post a photo that would help. You need a Photobucket (or similar) account to post photos.

I agree with the others that it may be an idea to find a more savvy vet.
