My Guinea has had trouble walking for the last 3 weeks. I've taken her to 3 different vets and all of them are baffled!. Her back legs are really stiff and when I pick her up they spread out and she is uncomfortable. When left in her cage she is busily munching away very enthusiastically and yet when examined gently by the vets, she keels over in agony and goes into a spasm on the table when her back is even touched lightly. She has not fallen and we don't think she has vit c deficiency as she is 4 years old and her diet has never changed. Can anyone help a very desperate and loving owner?

You poor thing.

I am sure i have read that paralysis of the back legs is common in guinea pigs so it is probably nothing you have done wrong

Hi there and welcome to the forum from us in OZ :)
I'm very sorry to hear about your little piggie :'( :'( :'(
Are you in the UK if so you could phone Vedra and ask her advice O0
I'm sure once either Lorna or Mary comes back on they'll be able to advise you O0
Until you can get an answer i'd just keep your piggie warm and comfortable and keep up with the feeding it sounds like you've tried everything for your little girl :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
We'll keep our paws crossed and sending your piggie some healing wheeks :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

do you think she may have pulled a disc in her back? kelly our dog 15 or more years ago did this and couldn't walk. the only other thing i can think of is a tick, but not sure if you have ticks in the UK? and would have thought the weather was too cold for them. other than that either arthritis or maybe a pinched nerve? hoping you find the cause, sending hugs and cuddles from us in oz :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-* hoping your baby gets better soon! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

As DSL says, best to get an xray. This will show up any changes in bone density, it could be arthritis, osteomyleitis or something else. If your piggy is a satin or has satin in her, the vet should look for osteodystrophy. Xray definately the next step and ask about a painkiller/anti inflammatory too. It has been suggested that rimadyl is the best one for joint problems although I have only used metacam.

My Ginger has the same problem as your guinea. She has had it for 2 months. She does not go into spasm but initially her legs were stiff too. I give her 1 Potters Tabritis tablet with 2.5 ml of water every day and one chewable vitamin c tablet everyday. This seems to have helped with her stiffness. I also clean her because she wee's on her leg. I also bath her once a week in war water. I am about to try Epsom salts in her bath water as this has been suggested to lower inflammation. The vet advised me to put her to sleep but she is still with me doing what she normally does but just a bit slower, and is no pain. She is 7 1/2.
