So, Thursday, Nov 6th, I adopted Gus, an abysinnian male who I am over the moon in love with. They estimated his DOB to be somewhere around August 23rd. I got the little guy home, safe and settled into his new habitat and after allowing him the first two days to just become acclimated to all the sights, sounds and smells of us, I finally felt comfortable getting to know him a little better come Sat. Besides being so ridiculously handsome, I immediately noticed that his left eye was all crusty and all four of his paws were red and raw.
I immediately called the pet store where I got him and they not only insisted I take him to our local exotic vet, but they also took care of all the medical bills, no questions asked.

Turns out, my little Gus had conjunctivitis, but he also had some sort of fungus on his paws. Meds prescribed for both his eye and a short round of antibiotics to err on the side of caution, as I was told crusty eyes could be an early sign of an URI, but we also have athlete's foot cream for his little paws.
To say it's been a long day for this little guy, would be an UNDERSTATEMET!

Anyone else ever have experience with either conjunctivitis or athletes "paw" before ? Ways you treated it?

Thanks!

As I "text this" , Gus is sound asleep and snoring on my chest! Prayers, as always, are welcome and appreciated!

❤️

Well done on getting him to the vets so quickly and it's great the pet store paid the bills.

I have had conjunctivitis in my pigs (the whole herd) and they were treated with eye drops, is that what you have been given? It did develop into an upper respiratory infection though but it was exceptional circumstances due to other ongoing issues. Therefore, keep an eye on his breathing just in case and get him back to the vets if it becomes laboured, and make sure he carries on eating, drinking and pooing ok. Hopefully the medication you have will clear it up quickly.

What cream were you given for the fungal?

My piggies have never really been sick, but it was good of you to take him to the vet so quickly. I hope he gets better soon.

Gus's plan is as follows:
1. erythromycin eye ointment: twice daily in left eye for one week. (Can use in right eye also if becomes red/crusty)

2. Tribrissen liquid antibiotic: 0.4ml orally twice a day for five days.

3. Terbinafine cream (generic or lamisil athletes foot cream): apply once daily to red/hairless areas of toes for ten days.

My little guy Gus is already showing signs of improvement with his eye! His feet are coming along and his sneezing hasn't subsided, but prayers and hopefully longer time on his antibiotics will work their magic!

I got Gus an early Christmas present, arrived today & he is happily installed in his new "digs" as I type this!

Check it out! Gus's own "Man town!"

I'm pretty sure he's quite happy! He LOVES his new wood house!

A late welcome to the forum. Gus is gorgeous, sorry to hear he's unwell, it is great the pet store are paying for the bills. I wish Gus well. Xx

Thanks Chief! I do believe that with love and care along with his meds and prayer, he will do well! Also, I'm pretty sure his new 8 square foot habitat (he was in a smaller habitat prior to today) his soft fleece lining, that fun wooden house he gets to knaw on and let's not forget that crinkle tube, he is kinda in Guinea Pig Heaven right about now! Makes my heart happy to see him popcorning all over the place! Good stuff!

Healing vibes to Gus
You obviously know just what you are doing with him to have got such good vet care sorted and to provide him with such a good home.
When he is well are you going to adopt him a friend?

Not sure about a friend yet, currently I'm leaning towards letting Gus be Gus and have a solo pad to himself. In the last couple months, prior to Gus, I've lost two girls, Cinnamon Roll & Abby. Once Gus is healthy, I am not so sure I'll be willing to risk introducing a new friend... But it's not a certainty, just kinda where I'm leaning. Thoughts?
