Hey guys.
Do any of you know if guinea pigs loose hair when stressed? I put mine out in a run in the garden for an hour today and when I picked the one girl up to bring in a load of hair just sort of came out like she was moulting and left a bald patch! She is a nervous girl and doesn't care for being handled much so just wondered if they do it when stressed!
Thanks!

I would get her seen by a vet. Hair loss at the sides indicate ovarian cysts. There will be a reason behind it and it is likely she will need treatment.

Best to get her checked by a vet, sounds like it could be fungal for the hair to be coming out so easily but could also be mange mites or ovarian cysts as mentioned above.

Oh no! I have not experienced that with guinea pigs but when i first got my rabbit she shed like crazy all over me when ever I picked her up, which I was told was due to stress. Hope she is OK xx

This is what I think it was, she hasn't got s bald patch as such that has come over time, it was more I picked her up from her run, and being the nervous one, a load of hair just came out and left a bald spot! So was just wondering if it happens :)

Germaine, the grey and white pig in my profile arrived on a Friday and was fine, we left her to her own devices and a few hours later she had a bald patch on her neck, I thought it might be stress too but googled it and mites kept coming up. The lady who rescued her suggested fungus treatment but it didn't help and when we brought her to vet the next day she had mites.
Mites can appear at times of stress and maybe she had been itchy but not irritated and the stress of being outside and scared stressed her and encouragged her to pull the hair. I would go to vets to check. Mites are painful!

Thank you! I will get hubby to check her (he is a vet) and l get him to get me some mite stuff from work to treat the gang, just in case! Won't hurt :)

Generally not from stress, but mites, fungal infections, ovarian cysts can cause hair loss. One of mine lost a significant amount of hair on her belly from a yeast infection on the skin (the vet suggested treating her with over-the-counter Monistat cream and a human antifungal shampoo, which cleared it up.) Definitely see a vet to get a definitive diagnosis, though.

It is extremely handy :)! I'm a vet nurse too so between us its extra handy :) xx
