is this normal? i know scratching due to skin conditions can cause it to the extent of bald patches but is a little hair loss normal?

Yes, it is. You will notice that guinea pigs loose some hair every now and then.
You need only worry if it comes out in tufts and is accompanied by vigorous scratching or biting.
