Hi, we found a small hair on the eye of our guinea pig CoCo today when we got him out to play. It seems to be dried on. It is across the middle of the eye where the eye lids meet when closed. Any suggestions as to how to remove it? I tried to gently pet his eye several times hoping it would move...but it would not budge. It is situated in a way that tweezers can not be used to remove it. A small problem, but I do not what to do more harm than good. Thanks much.

Hi,Do NOT use tweezers! if your pet moved while you were trying to do that you could seriously damage his eye!i think wait and see if it comes off...if it seems to be a seriouse problem then take him to the vet...but i really dont recommend it..it should just clear up on its own.I hope i was helpful!

Thanks for the reply. Tweezers are out of the question. That is why I posted here for help. I'm sure others have encountered this problem. I was just wondering how others resolved the problem. He is old in age. When we brought him home many years ago, he fit in the palm of my hand. Will watch and see.

well i have 4 guinea pigs(4 more on the way! but it was an accidential breeeding)and one is a long haird guinea and she got a hair in her eye and after about 2 days the eye just kind of started watering a bunch witch pushed the hair out of her eye,so he should be fine!also please check out my post called "Milly's Pregnant!"

If the hair is stuck on the eye you need to try and lubricate it. Brolene eye drops can be brought from the chemist just pop a couple in and see if it losens it, if not I would take your guines to a vet as it may be scracthing the cornea or the lid and could possibly cause and ulcer, usually fulcidin an antibiotic eye drop is prescribed to prevent any problems if the eye surface is scratched. I would not leave it to cause problems if you can't get to the chemist to get brolene then try dropping some water into it if the hair is dried on then the eye is sore and having trouble lubricating and needs treatment sooner than later hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum, CoCo. :)

Cooled boiled water, saline or Optrex eye wash could each be used to flush the eye. Using a cotton pad or a 2ml syringe, drop the solution onto the eye for a few seconds; this will 'clean' the eye so to speak. If the concerning object does not clear with such rinsing, it could be a scratch on the surface of the eye, which would need veterinary attention to determine the "severity" of it. Antibiotic eye drops would probably be prescribed by the vet (usually Fucithalmic or chloramphenicol-based drops).

With saline solution and self grooming on his part, we were able to move the hair to a place that I was able to remove it. Many thanks!

Hi glad that you have been able to remove the hair from CoCo's eye. Must be a big relief for both of you :)
