Hi all,

I just got my guinea pig last week and noticed he has a red hairless spot a but anterior to his mid-side which I can't determine if it's a wound or some sort of infection.

Attached a picture of it below. Kindly help me on this one.

Thanks,

Mark

Please have your guinea pig checked by a vet for ringworm or mange mites; both cause intense and painful irritation of the skin and they can look very similar in the early stages, as the guinea pig often scratches and bites itself bloody. Either condition are sadly still fairly common in stressed young shop guinea pigs that have not yet got a fully developed immune system when their short lives are upturned a few times.

With the right diagnosis and treatment from a good vet, you should get over it well. Please do not treat on spec with low dosed shop products, as that is can make things a lot worse than better. Do not put anything on in the meantime, as that can make a proper diagnosis even more difficult.

You will also need to have his companion treated in order to prevent him from coming down with the same. You should be able to claim back the vet cost from the pet shop with a proper written diagnosis and vet bill.

Thank you very much for the quick response, Wiebke! Will definitely have him checked at the vet for ringworm or mange mites.

Apologies for not providing complete data. I've updated my details with my location (Manila, Philippines).

Thank you! That will help us to stick to citing US brands, which will be more accessible to you and to take into account a tropical climate and access to a non-specialist general vet.
