Hello

I am new to this and would really appreciate any help you can give me as my poor little pig Hamish is in a bit of a bad way.

He is unable to walk and when he does he hops and muuttersto himself before stopping and planting his head on the floor. Seems to be getting worse by the hour. He has been to the vets and whilst there and put a remarkable show of being well but now he can barely move.

Have been hand feeding him as he has recently had his teeth done following some weight loss and was fine and dandy then suddenly he was buring his head in hay in the corner of his cage looking sorry for himself. Gave him some floor time to see how he was and it wasn't good.

The vet seems to think he has hurt his back and advised me to keep a eye on him as he seemed to have improved from th night before (at the vets) but he is no unable to clean himself and seems to be only able to eat grass appart from his hand feed which he is keen to take.

Has anyone out there had this happen or know of any causes as I am lost. i just wish he could talk. He is only 1 year old and has been through the mill this year with teeth/weight loss issues. I just want his to be well and will do whatever it takes.

Thanks for you help in advance

Craig

oh dear I'm so sorry for you, a pig that won't life its head is probably very ill. I'm not sure what the problem is, maybe a stroke? but please try and syringe feed him some liquid as well as food as it is really important to keep his fluids up.

Sorry i'm not much more help but I am sure one of the more knowledgeable members will be along soon.

Sending healing vibes to Hamish

Thanks.

He is taking water on board reluctantly but his food is a watery pellet mash with added vit c. The water he is taking on also has vit c added. Veg in cage but no real urge to tuck in as he is not well enough.

I am so sorry for your problem and the fact that a visit to your vet hasn't helped at all!

Scurvy is the only thing that I can come up with, but my experience is only limited and it could easily be something else. The fact that he has lost his appetite as well, argues against a mechanical problem. http://www.guinealynx.info/scurvy.html

Sadly, Laura has taken some time out. You may profit from asking on the medical forum on guinealynx, as you need help quickly.

Hello Again

I am sorry top say little Hamish passed away a couple of nights ago looked to be quite comfortable. We will miss him as will his cage mate Boris who knows something is wrong.

Oh, that's such a shame. Poor little boy :(. I'm so sorry for you and little Boris.
RIP Hamish, run free at the bridge :rose

Aww, this is so sad about Hamish. So sorry that he didn't make it and that you didn't find out exactly what was wrong him. RIP Hamish little one. xx
