this place is sum where down in england i saw sumthing about it on the telly it was a farm i think and it had a village for gunniepigs it was called gunniepig village it was so cool from wat i seen 8) 8) 8) O0 O0

think you mean a farm that i visited years ago up in warwickshire ,its like a farm experience place and got craft village there as well, remember the piggy village was in a big tent and it really was a piggy village, saw some piggys with mange in seperate cages though :( sorry but cant remember where exactly it was.

Do you mean Jimmy's Farm? They've built a Guinea Pig Village, with little cottages and stuff. It was a TV series recently because Jimmy is a pig farmer and has been struggling to get his business up and running. They have farmers markets and nature trails and stuff there too.

That's the one I was thinking of too, Sophie. It was the cause of much controversy and there was a lengthy thread on here about it. I'll look it up.

If it was that programme I watched some and it made me cross - they were laughing about what a rabbit could get up to when put with guineas, allowed one to get in the village and laughed and stood and watched it rather than get it out, and there were loads of kids and people swarming around the guineas who were no doubt terrified as they had only been in there 5 minutes. Didn't foxes get in there too or something?

I seem to remember a visitor's dog got in and killed a pig - but don't quote me on that!

They also had mini pigs for sale not so long ago, so obviously are not just sows in there!

I have heard the guineas at jimmy's farm aren't looked after especially well, but couldn't be certain on that as I've never visted

I've seen the pics from last year and certainly wouldn't be giving them money. There was even a picture of a guinea pig cowering underneath a buggy OUTSIDE the enclosure having been dropped by a child after it was handed to them by a member of staff. Pretty scary that they're selling baby guinea pigs seeing as how all the pigs were rescues and were supposed to be all sows?

The "houses" that provided shelter were filthy dirty and the bottles covered in algae in the inside. I hope things have improved for the poor animals.

I agree I was outraged watching the programme. I didn't like the area where they were kept either they were so vulnerable. If it was me I would have built a huge indoor pen with loads for them to do. I liked the idea of the houses for the children but they weren't big enough and should have been built around hutches in a secluded area at least.

The idea is lovely and can be combined with education which I'm all for but this was just a money making racquet with no concern for the welfare of animals. I had Flora and Fleur on my knee when watching it and cried buckets when one pig died the staff just didn't care I wouldn't give them my cash!

i have seen the telly programme of that (Jimmys FArm) and i cant say that i agree with it! i always thought that due to a guinea pig having poor eyesight they didnt like being in large open spaces as it was too frightening for them... , from what i can remember it was a very large enclosure with not much outside cover for them to shelter in when going from one house to another? i could be wrong on that - but i know mine get all disorientated if you put them in too big a space - they almost freeze... :-\

Take some pics if you guys go - would be interesting to see! 88)

There's a place in Hertfordshire that looks great in the brochure (but haven't been there yet to find out) that has a miniature village with 300 guinea pigs. It's called Willows Farm Village, London Colney, St. Albans. I hope to visit it soon.

300?!

I would love to see what sort of conditions they are kept in. I can't imagine there's somewhere that can keep 300 of them in adequate conditions. I'll be willing to bet they let them breed (and inbreed!) indiscriminately.

Yep they probably started with 25 and it's grown and grown! I don't agree with many places like this because they are only geared up to take money of people, the welfare of animals doesn't really come into it.

The best one I have actually visited is Stowe Farm in Downham Market Norfolk they had no more than 10 pigs with loads of room in barn, they were so gorgeous! Lots of room for all the animals. I feel they really did their homework when it came to knowing what the pigs like and how to care for them. It's pricey though a couple of years back it was £5.00 for adults and £4.00 for children but a nice day out! :)

reference to my earlier reply-yes it was called hatton village, when there many many years ago so dont know what its like now.

I remenber a comerial on t.v.. It was to do with a credit card or something.. And they're were scientists like talking to piggies and they had like houses and cars. ;D ;D ;D

Eeek i'm not far from jimmys farm. I go past it when I'm on the train to london

About the place in Hertfordshire with 300 guineas in the miniature village (but it can't be that miniature!), I am hoping to visit it soon, but I too am a little worried about the conditions and in-breeding. The brochure/web site makes it look amazing and says that even the stroppiest teenager will be captivated and delighted by the guinea pigs, but when we were planning a visit last December, there was an apology on the web site to say that the guineas had been temporarily moved out to make way for the Christmas special events! I wonder where they could move 300 guineas to ?!

That's not far from me either...and OH used to work in London Colney...never heard of it...must be fairly close to the RSPCA at Southridge though :-\

300 is a lot. It's very easy to let them breed and not care, and I think this may be the case with that place :(
