Hi,

My guinea pig went in for xray today and the vet found a stone in her urethra. She said where the stone is it is very awkward, its not in bladder and not nearly out of urethra (these are the best places to have a stone apparently :) )
She said she is going to start her on valium to see if she will pass it herself.
Any thoughts or advice?
How do they take valium tablets? Sprinkle on food or what?

Sorry to read this. My piggies have never had valium before so I cant offer any advice there but when I give them tablets or powder I crush up the tablets between 2 spoons then mix the powder into a small amount of fruit baby food then syringe it to them.

My Fred has Valium to sedate him at the vets, just before he has a dental. I don't why it would be prescribed for stones, my Guinea pig Wilma passed a urethra stone the other day. I was just about to give her a bath when I saw something at the vulva opening, the poor girl was in a fair bit of pain. Stones can block the tube, so please ensure your guinea pig is not having problems urinating.

This is the stone she passed.

Only thing I can think about using valium, given the nature of the drug is that it might allow part of the urinary tract to relax in order for the stone to move along to a more accessible place, or indeed be excreted.
I haven't however got any experience of it's use in guinea pigs so don't know if this is the case, and there seems to be little on the internet about its use in piggies so can't really help.

She is urinating fine. She has been in vets since Monday and we pick her up Wednesday. The vet said valium is a muscle relaxant and muscles spasm to help it pass?
