I'm due to pick up what i thought were 2 female pigs on friday, however it turns out as they have become bigger that they are 2 males and 1 female. I really have my heart set on female guinea pigs so i was wondering if it would be ok to just bring the female one home? would she be fine on her own or will i need to get her a friend and if so will they get on as they wont be from the same litter? i have been in touch with a rescue enquiring about getting a female but because i dont have a indoor run yet ill probably be refused when they do the home check (i have ordred a ball pool as a run from the internet but it might not be here for the home check)

hiya guinea pigs can get very lonely on there own i have been told x but i have 4 guinea pigs all from different litters and they all get on fine and 2 are alot older than my 2 new recent ones x hope this helps:)

thanks, I'm just worried in case i cant find another female straight away and if shes been on her own for a while will it be harder for her to accept another pig? went to the pet shop today to see if they had any females and thet didnt have any in at all, i only have one cage and no room for another so seperate cages wouldnt be an option if they didnt get on!

females usaually always except more in to the herd/cage so should be fine but she may get a bit sad while she is waiting on her own i have never brought piggies from a pet shop i prefer to go to a breeder thats where i got all mine from xx

are there any rescues nearby that you could take your piggy to to pick her own friend? normally girls do get on i have 6 girls and only 2 of those are sisters and they all get on fine, just have to figure out a pecking order :))

She's best with a friend, and no I very much doubt you will be refused because you don't have an indoor run especially as you are getting one! What age is this girl? When was she removed from her brothers?

I personally would get her a friend asap, as she's going to be in a strange place, took away from her family and kept herself I wouldn't like it, I'm sure you wouldn't either if you were her.

Your already doing the right thing by getting her friend from rescue, they can help you pair her with the most suitable pig for her, also they will give you ongoing support :).

Good luck with your new pigs :) x

If she wasn't moved from her brother's by 21 days she may already be pregnant! most people start off with one or two pigs then its just one more lol they are addictive pet's! It is better to get a rescue pig and if i was aware of it before i got mine then that's what i would of done.

I only have 1 male guinea pig. Hubby wont let me have another one even though he did consider it at one point.
Reggie seems happy enough to me though, he is full of character and whenever I talk to him at his cage he comes out and puts his little nose up to me etc. Very cute.
I know getting him a friend would be ideal but trust me the Hubby is hard work so doubt he will give in at all.
I just make sure I give my boy lots of attention x

piggy will be 4 weeks old on friday, will have a proper look when i go as I'm not convinced the woman knows what she is doing regarding sexing them but ive done lots of research on the internet. She has 2 pregnant females aswell and she said i could have one of those but i said no way!

What a responsible person she is, some people shouldn't be allowed animals! Perhaps tell her to hand them into rescue, and stop breeding there are plenty of homeless pigs as it is!

When I enquired about getting another guinea pig, the rescue suggested I get the same sex and around a similar age. She offered me a cute little boy who was around 5 weeks old (Reggie is now about 20 weeks old)

I was so tempted to have him but Hubby just wont let me have another one :(
But peace of mind is Reggie is getting loads of attention from me and Hubby and he is well looked after.
If you can, I would visit the rescue with your piggy and let the piggy see how it gets on with others. x

Here is the best website for sexing guinea pigs of all ages with lots of pictures: http://www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm

It is much better to keep guinea pigs in company, especially babies - they are herd animals and are not really wired to be on their own. You will also miss out on all the interaction and popcorn parties that happen between two piggies and that make them so special and unique. At that young age, bonding will not be a problem; most piggies accept babies without a problem.

Where abouts are you? Here is a list of reputable rescues who will only rehome healthy and guaranteed not pregnant piggies. As an alternative to another female, you could also consider rehoming a neutered male - cross gender bondings are the most stable of them all. http://www.guineapigrehome.org.uk/gp/centres.asp

You could also post in the "rescue wanted" section for one of the forum rescues to contact you; please state your area.

PS: I'd better not say anything on behalf of that lady you're getting your piggy from. Please give her the sexing link.
