He has a vets appointment today.

He has a lump at the incision point from when he was neutered. He was neutered in Feb I think so ages and ages ago. What does an absess look and feel like? His is the size of a small grape and isn't majorly hard but you can feel a definite lump.

If it is one how can it have come up so long after. I know it DOES happen but how and why?

What treatment do they have for it?

Sorry I can't offer any advice Lisa but just wanted to say hope Orson will be ok & that it's nothing too serious xx

What a bummer if it is. I've heard that post-neuter abscesses can occur up to a year after the op, but don't know the hows and whys. Abscesses are pockets of infection so presumably the bacteria brews very slowly in some cases. Again - how, why.....your guess is as good as mine.

If it is an abscess they may try withdrawing the contents by syringe, if it is found to be pus they should be able to lance it (without anaesthetic) and let you do the draining/flushing the cavity at home. They may prescribe antibiotics but I do feel that in most cases, topical antibiotics of some sort are preferable, but it's barely heard of in practice.

Abscesses need to heal from the inside out so the wound will need keeping open, ideally you'll be squeezing and maybe flushing the abscess 3x daily. Once you've not been getting any pus out for at least 3 days and there is no swelling there to suggest it's building up again, that is the stage I start to let it heal over.
I found the hardest part was keeping the incision open. Dare I say it, I did a heck of a lot better when it burst on its own as it left a neat hole that didn't close quickly; the incision stitched itself together too quickly for me.

Good luck at the vets hun. xxxxx

It would have to be him wouldn't it? He's so untame and he hates being handled and he has been known to bite. I can see it to be really great fun next few weeks!

My pig is due to have an absess removed tomorrow under GA.

SHe'll then have the wound left open, I have to put antiseptic powder in it every day and put gel on the surface and antibiotics :{

It felt like a lump and I took her in to the vet to get it checked and now glad I did.

Hope you're able to get it sorted.

Okay not an abscess.

Orson has somthing to do with scar tissue, some water and stuff built up in the area where his testical was. He may not need anything doing as it's only cosmetic (although he did tell me that some people get it removed! WHY?)

In a very small number of cases it keeps growing and if it does that it will be worth getting it removed. If it stays as it is then I don't need to.

Relieved!

Glad it's not more bad news for you Lisa!

Love to Orson! xoxo

Should have posted earlier - but has his willly been cleaned "proper"? Just a thought - but seen a few boars with "coated" willie in my time that presented as an abcess-type-lump in the nether regions but just needed a bit of "tender care" (Vedra just got "stuck in" :)))

Hugs HUn - you;re going through the mill atm - thinking of you lots and sending positive vibes
