Hay and Water?

My driver is away for a few weeks so there is no one to cut fresh grass for my Guineas. We are now giving them dried hay we bought at the pet shop.......they are not happy!

We watch them eat some hay, go drink water, eat more hay, go drink water, as so forth. When eating the fresh grass they rarely drink water and certainly not until all the grass is finished.

Is it normal for them to drink so much when eating the dry hay? We bought three different kinds of hay and they do it with each type.

Thanks all in advance.

I think it makes total sense! Lots more water in grass compared to hay.

Compare it to eating really dry biscuits instead of soft cake, you'd want some tea with that, wouldn't you ;)

Mine don't have the water bottle right by the hay so I don't see it as clearly but mine drink a lot of water and get no grass at all (buried under two feet of snow...)

mine drink and eat at the same time think it is quite normal for dried foods as opposed to veggies!

I'm a little worried about colic.

I know if horses eat too much hay without enough water it can cause an intestinal blockage that can be fatal. I suppose hay is hay but I feared perhaps the hay I bought might be overly old and dry...........

You'd know by smell as a general rule if it was really old hay, mind you I may be out of order saying that I grew up on a farm and you could definately tell the old from the new so that comment may not be helpful unless you are used to hay, sorry. :red

I also can tell the difference between good and bad hay and I didn't grow up on a farm - it just smells bad so i'm sure you'd be able to smell 'off' hay. I expect the stuff you have bought is fine. They will drink loads if they are used to grass.

Hay is good for their teeth - better than grass is so it's good they are having a change and by the sounds of it they are enjoying it too.
