Hi piggy people!

Is anyone else having problems getting hay right now in North America? I've been waiting for a delivery of oxbow orchard hay from amazon and it still hasn't been shipped! They have till the 26th to deliver it, but I am running low and may have to buy those horrid tiny bags from the pet store. I ordered the same hay in July and it came in without a problem. I did check the pricing on it and amazon has now doubled the price of a 50 lb box; it used to be $62 and now is $115! That's outragous! Or does hay jump that much in the winter? I know they can't harvest any as it is winter, but I am worried about getting hay for my piggies.

I have looked at other sites and they are all out of hay too. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions about where to find hay?

Saskia of LAGPR did a youtube video on hay, the suppliers she talks about are all in the US. Sorry I can't remember who they were now.

I think small pet select are in the US

I will have to check them out. Thank you!

I will have to take a look at her website, maybe they mention it there? I just looked on their site, and I didn't see any hay suppliers mentioned except that they love small pet select. I will have to check them out! I did see that they have cute items in the store on their site; must resist temptation.

That was a great video! Thank you! I think the one thing that Saskia missed out on is the difference of the hay in the tiny bags versus the hay in the 25 lb or 50 lb options. The same brand is awful in the small bags but can be fantastic in the larger size. The companies cut up the hay into tiny pieces to put it in the small bags to sell at the store, but the whole hay bale is what is shipped in the 25 or 50 lb size.

I was talking with my mom on the phone and she said that my aunt (her sister) used to have problems this time of year getting hay. My aunt had cows and horses on her farm. She had some fields that she would harvest hay and store up for her animals. My mom said that she would run out of the hay that she baled and would order hay from Canada as there normally was a shortage of hay at this time of year.

I have great memories as a kid sitting underneath an oak tree and watching her riding around the field cutting down the grass. The smell as it dried was heavenly! When I drive past a field as it is being cut, as an adult, I roll down the window and drive slow so I can smell the hay drying.

I have got the Timothy hay, the orchard hay and the alfalfa hay in the past from small pet select and it's all been good quality. Lovely and green. :)

Hi! We’ve been using chewy for a while now, and I would very much recommend them to you. The shipping is super fast, within around two days, and prices have stayed the same since we started using it.

What type of hay do you order? I get orchard as my piggies didn't like timothy and turned their noses up at it. On the plus side, the orchard hay doesn't give my asthmatic in-laws any issues.

We buy the large bag of Oxbow Hay Blend which is a mix of Western Timothy and Orchard Grass, and we mix in a small bag of Oxbow’s botanical hay for enrichment. There’s also options like oat, but we found the strands were too long and irritated our piggies when they tried to eat it. Oxbow has many different types of hay for you to try so I recommend experimenting!

Thank you everyone for your help! It does look like there are a few brands of hay that I wasn't aware of that I can get quickly. I am going to try to be patient and wait till the 26th; that is the last day that amazon quoted for the hay to arrive. I did make a discovery about my order, I somehow ordered two boxes of 50 lbs of hay! I had meant to order two bags of treats for the piggies instead. If I do receive this order, I will contact my local rescue to see if they want the other box. I really don't have room for 100 lbs of hay with two piggies! That or I need to get more piggies to help eat all that hay.... :hmm:
