I came home from work last night (10 pm) to find Maya sitting in her box. Her right eye lids were pink and swollen, with white gunk all around them. She was feeling very sorry for herself. I expect that she got poked by a bit of hay when eating from the hay rack. I examined the eye as best I could, but could see no injury or foreign object. I bathed the eye with very cold water to reduce the swelling. I bathed it again before going to bed and pulled out a small piece of hay. This morning, it is looking a lot better, and she is opening the eye a bit wider. She is feeling better in herself, too, as I saw her do a short run around the floor. She is still eating and drinking as normal. I will continue to bathe the eye in cold water, and might take her to the Vet tomorrow if it still looks a bit pink.
The exact same thing happened to Bonnie some months ago. She got a bit if hay in her eye and had been scratching it and made it sore. She was fine once the bit of hay had been removed.

P.S. The opaque-ness in picture 2 is due to camera flash.

Please have her checked by a vet as soon as you can! Hay pokes and damage to the eye are not always obvious, especially when there has not been any ulceration. A vet has a special dye to see whether the surface has been damaged by the piece of hay.

Thank you, Wiebke, I still have not decided whether to take her or not. I bathed the eye again at about 4pm. It is almost back to normal. . Perhaps there is a very slight opaque-ness, but that's part of the healing process. The swelling in the lids has gone right down. May vet it just to make sure. Resent paying £30 for the vet to do nothing.

Hi
My celery has had a habit of getting hay poke. We have had it at least 3 times. All of them times, she has had either like a blister on the eyeball or its been scratched. None of these have been noticeable under normal light. Also one time, Celery had managed (god knows how!) too get two bits in there. We saw the first piece but it was only when the vet really lifted her eyelid that we found the second piece and that was the one that had scratched the top of the lens.

I am with you on the, I know when my piggie needs the vets, but I think on this one I would get her checked out. This is my personal opinion and I am not telling you what you should or shouldn't do.

I would see the vet to be honest, eyes are very dicey... The dye the vet puts in shows up any damage, this can often be repaired with antibiotic drops. Love to Maya x

Hello I'm no expert but judging by what happened with craig last night id take your piggy vet for a check. The reason being when the vet dropped dye in his eye this morning it showed the tiny ulcer and I didn't think it had ulcerated and if I'm being honest that pic looks similar to how Craig's looked. I had to pay £100 for the emergency fee which is an absolute rip off but I'm so glad I took him today x x x x

Hope Craig is doing well now

I agree she needs to see a vet, there have been pigs on here who ended up with much more serious issues after a hay poke so it is always best to get prompt treatment.

Aw, I hope his eye clears up soon.

Vets, vets, vets! I lost my beloved Shambo earlier this year because of his eye & currently have Bubbles under vet supervision for the same reason. There could be something behind your guineas eye, which in turn could cause an infection or abcess to form, causing even more problems. Please, when it comes to their eyes, it's best to get them checked out properly.

Maya's eye still looks fine to me today. But I am bowing to those of greater knowledge and have her booked in at the Vets for 5 o' clock. I hope it stops raining before then. I don't drive and its a 15 minute walk! Will let you all know how we get on.

Nice 1 @7squeakers!

Good luck Maya :)

Good that you have her seen. Damage can be deceptive and a poke may not be visible except with the dye in the eye. Once you get infections inside the eyeball or behind it, they are very hard to near impossible to treat. I agree with @7squeakers that any eye injuries need to be taken seriously.

Morning, all!
Well, I took Maya to the vet yesterday to have her poked eye checked. (I am now £41 poorer!) As it turned out, the eye did have an ulcer and quite a big one, the vet said. I was prescribed Fucithalmic eye drops (usually for cats and rabbits). One drop in the eye twice a day. Maya is a very good girl and lets me put the ointment in with no fuss. The eye is looking fine today. I am glad I let you lot persuade me to take her. I feel better for it.

How is Craig's eye doing?

I am glad that you went! Eye injuries can be very deceptive. Thankfully, they tend to go down fairly well with the drops. ;)

I'm glad you went :) It is horrible to see under the green dye.
Celerys went down after a couple days. She was very good and let me put the stuff in. I continued with meds and she was fine.

Its the problem with the eye cause you cant see it!

So glad you went, eye's are dicey and need the dye put in at the vets to assess any damage. I am sure she will be on the mend soon x

Maya's eye still looking fine. Here's a photo of it and one to show you what a lovely big girl she is!
We have to go back to the vet next Monday at 4pm. I'm sure it doesn't need any more treatment.
