I am so fed up as my gang have hay mites again! They keep getting them. I have bathed them using lice and easy twice and using the instructions ensuring the faces were washed too. I asked gorgeous guineas for advice and tried the wipesthey recommended but they keep coming back. I use hay for pets ings hay like many other people. I cannot change to Timothy hay as my partner is very allergic to it. The vet bed and towels are washed every three days at sixty degrees. I took Sophie to the vet as she had them first and the vet said she needs bathing and no medication will work on hay mites.

Has anybody else had this problem?

Hiya, we were under the impression that all forms of mites can be treated with Xeno 450 as we get our hay from local farms the chances of a mite infestation is quite high. We treat our piggies 3 times a year and have never had any problems with mites either internal or external.

We think this is the cheapest at the moment.

I was always under the impression that Ivermectin (preferably by injection) was for mange mites. You could try Lyclear Creme rinse from the pharmacy. Patch test for 48 hours first then leave on for 10 minutes and rinse. Repeat weekly for 2 weeks.

Yes I thought it was only for mange mites. Why do they keep getting it! It is driving me to despair!

Hope you can get them shifted Gigi x

Thank you. I just called a vet recommended on the forum to ask if spot on will help. They are going to call me back.

It sounds like static lice. Ivermectin won't help as they aren't blood feeders....they feed on dead bits of skin. The good news is, that they're totally harmless. They don't bite or itch, they don't even have legs to move!

Thanks Amanda. So shall I not bother with spot on?

Bathing will help - but as soon as you put more hay in, they'll get them again. Mine had them, I did nothing (probably used different hay, I use different sorts) and they went away

Ivermectin given orally is much more effective than any form of spot on.

It's a shame you can't use Timothy hay from the US as it's sterile, so no hay mites. Otherwise I would try to pop a bit of hay into a container & in the microwave on high for 40 seconds before giving it to them, it may help kill the little mites ;)
Now that's a good idea! ;)

If you have some space in your freezer you could always freeze some hay first to kill off anything lurking in it. It sounds like we have been really lucky that our piggies have not had an infestation of this type. Just goes to show - we learn something new every day but that wont stop us from giving our piggies an extra check this weekend
