….. not theirs - me!

I wonder have you Andy experience or advice….

So I started them out on Burges feeding hay, but at 6.99 a bag and them guzzling it like nobody’s business, it was getting quite expensive. So I tried a new one - Nature’s Own Devon Hay. Half the price and over twice the amount. They LOVE IT! I have given them more because they like to sit in it, hidden and eat all round them.

The problem is that it’s a strong smelling hay and I’m a bit allergic to it and because they live in my kitchen/living room - the place now smells of hay!

I’m thinking of options - 1 go back to Burges, (but now I see how they love the Nature’s own - I feel bad)
2 give them less Nature’s Own - just plenty to eat and not get buried in….

Or …. And this is where I hope you good folk could help….. something else?

Any hay brand experience or personal experience or ideas welcome thanks!

Hiya, sorry to hear your having issues, I buy hay in a massive bail from a shop (they do horse supplies and other animals too) for £6 and there hardly any smell from it, I’ve an air purifier running in the living room too, I hope you find hay that works for you at a reasonable price good luck 🤞

Ah now - I’ve been thinking about an air purifier - do they really work and reduce the hay smell? Can you recommend a make/model thanks!

I just got a cheap one off eBay, I think they work, everyone has different views

If getting a box of hay delivered across the water wasn't going to be horrendously expensive for shipping I'd say go for it, but you'll get hammered on the shipping costs too quickly. Nature's Own do a few different hays and it might be worth seeing if any of the others work out for you (Comet adored the timothy rich stuff).

Other than that, Assisi's gotta get their hay from somewhere. If they get it from a pet shop it's not so helpful but I suspect they're more likely to bulk buy it from a farm somewhere. They might know where to ask around.

ok Thankyou - I’ve ordered the Timothy hay soft box to try! Fingers crossed!

4.95 delivery - I’ll try it and see how long it lasts! When I had rabbits I just bought a bale and put it in their shed and let them have at it! But I’m finding that living with this particular one is a bit much. Aye it may be a case of trial and error. We’ll get there!

I use HayBox too.
The piggies love it and it doesn’t seem to smell overly strong.
It’s very good value and good quality

I have bad hay allergies and have tried a lot! My pigs are also live in our living room, Timothy triggers my allergies terrible so we never buy that, we have been on orchard grass from timothyhay.co.uk for the past year I’d say they boys love it, the quality is great and consistent and my allergies are fine. I did take perscription antihistamines for just over a year but since I had covid in Feb I stopped and haven’t felt the need to start again!

Sadly it's always a bit of a risk, buying a large amount of hay without a sampler, because the greedy fusspots can be so stubborn lol. It could be the nicest hay in the world but then you've pulled it out of the bag or box wrong and somehow they just know. My two are happy with the timothy box from Happy Hay, and with a bit of luck it'll stay that way.

I hope you find some hay that works for you and piggies.
We mix it up, sometimes I order haybox, sometimes natures own. We have also occasionally had hay from our local fam shop, but I always find that a bit more dusty.
The boys favoruite is currently the soft timothy hay from haybox.

Can’t wait to get mine now! Thanks!
I would reccomend ordering some samples first… hay box Timothy resulted in me being unable to breath after a few days, I think hay affects people differently so it’s worth trying small amounts before investing!

I ordered some of that tonight! Here’s hoping!
