Hello! We're collecting a pair of rescue board shortly, excitement is at its peak! I'm using fleece in the enclosure but am I right that I need to have a tray of hay at one end for them to burrow and rummage through? Is this in addition to feeding them hay each day? Thank you!

The hay you put in the trays that they burrow in and forage through will be what they eat. Hay needs to be available all the time and with Boars its best to put it in multiple places.

you can choose to just use a hay bag or hay rack, but personally, I think it nicer to give them unhindered access to hay which they can get into - mine are bedded fully on hay and love nothing more than being sat in a pile, munching away! They eat so much more now I don’t use hayracks

The love affair between guinea pigs and hay is one of my favourite things! They can never have too much. I give a large, soft pile for burrowing in and eating, and a large pile of stalky hay also on the floor for eating. I top it up, usually in the evening before bed so they have plenty through the night. I made a correx tray to separate the hay end from the vet bed, which works well.

As above, mine really enjoy piles of hay. They’ll hide while they eat, lie down while they eat (so lazy!) and even sleep in it.

Have fun but remember to give them time to settle in first. We’d love some photos once they’re feeling more at home.

Hi and welcome

You want to have soft hay in a hay tray for eating, burrowing, playing and sleeping (and toiletting) in. Any stalky hay is best offered in a hay rack or served as a treat outside the hay tray in order to minimise the risk of eye injuries.

Welcome to the forum.
Mine have hay in piles on the cage floor, stuffed into a paper bag and stuffed into a carrot cottage.
I give them a mix of soft meadow hay and a handful of first cut which is stalkier but they love it.

Thank you all! They're just settling in but seem happy so far. At the moment I have a hay sack at one end and a small pile of hay at another. I will experiment with a hay tray for them soon.

Here are my boys, one completely in the hay box and another contemplating the other one! They usually got heads down bums in the air. I sprinkle pellets in for foraging
