Our piggies have been with us for 2 weeks, 1 week in their new C&C. I have created a hay tray at one end of the 5x2 and the 2x1 loft which we added yesterday is also hay. A couple of questions on hay:
- I have newspaper underneath and change that daily, is there something else I could put under there or is newspaper the best thing? The rest of the cage has fleece liners.
- at the moment I add a couple of handfuls of hay a couple of times a day and at bedtime and spot clean the corner where they wee and poo, is this ok?
- how often would you replace the entire content of the haytray? I do that every other day or so at the moment.
- and finally, should I offer different kinds of hay? I ordered a huge bag of meadow hay from a company recommended by a friend who has had piggies for a while and who said pet shop hay wasn't great. It looks completely different to the one they came with (rescue piggies) but they do seem to be eating it ok and seem happy. Should I still have a haybag with some different hay or is it ok to have just the one cage to rummage round and eat?

Thank you!

Hello you doing great I think.
I have 2 piggies who poop wee in a tray . I put a towel in bottom and change every few days,
Both love the fresh when its cleaned

Newspaper is fine underneath, but so would any other type of absorbent bedding - shavings, paper bedding. If you’re getting on with the newspaper than that is fine.
Whether you need to replace the entire tray daily is just dependent on what’s is happening - if every other day is working then that’s fine - the important thing is that wet hay is removed every day and that they always have fresh hay available.
My piggies are fully bedded on hay in their hutch. Wet hay is removed every day, and fresh thrown on top multiple times a day. A full clean once a week

If they are happy with the meadow hay then that is fine. Any grass hay is fine for them to eat. Mine originally had a mix of meadow and Timothy but have gone off the timothy and now just have meadow for bedding and eating.
