when i bought my guinea pigs the other day, i just bought hay from local pet shop thinking there was only one type.. since then i have read up and aparntly there are differnt types of hay and differnt quality, i been told you can buy some with dandylions in, is this true? I'm going to throw my current hay away as its really bitty and contains some sharpe bits i just dont think its very good, any advice on best places to buy near stourbridg are or if there any ** online stores, and what i should be looking for in good quality hay, i kno it may seem a little picky.. but why shouldnt tey have the best, if its out there lol

does this type cause so much mess.. I'm finding wit the one ihave at the moment its soo fine n bitty that it just goes evvvverywhere!

Yes you can get hay with dandelion in, it is made by Excel. Or you can buy other plain hay and use dried dandelion to sprinkle on it.

Others have already posted the link to our website, but if you have nay questions about the different types am happy to help and we also do small sample bags for you try to see which one your pet likes best before buying a full bag :)

I use Animal Magic Supplies, and we use a staple hay which is orchard Grass it's divine very green, smells green and I've never found any problem. Plus it's better for pigs although pricey it is imported from the states!

We also have some other hays, depending which one I treat them with Oat hay is a hit here. I use majority Oxbow or Burn Hays!

Lynne is Great, I am off to place my order now!

I would recommend starting here.

:)

Mine have Oxbow Orchard Grass too and althought expensive (I think it was about £62 + P&P for 22kg) I ordered it in May and have about 1/2 a box left so expect it to last 5 months (I have been feeding 7 piggies). Maybe a little less now as I have just adopted 2 more piggies.

I just buy a bale of Meadow hay for £4.50. I recently got it from a different feed store cos the bale from my local shop was brown and musty. This one is green and smells delicious and the owner was very helpful!

I ordered from animal magic a few weeks ago and the food has been going down a treat with my guinea pigs. You have a good choice which really pleased me.

I also buy my hay by the bale from our local feed store (you could also try horse supply shops) It's the cheapest way that I've found by far, and the hay is good quality. My pigs can't get enough of it!

I was looking at the dust free hay on animal magic as well but wasnt sure what size the bags were so decided to try to find out.
Anyway I found the company who make it,

http://www.dustfreehay.co.uk/hay.html

I ordered the two string bale, which is approx 15-18kilos for £26.99 delivery included, ordered on tuesday night its getting delivered tomorrow so will let you know what its like.;)

If you are unsure about anything on the Animal Magic Website then please ask and we are more than happy to help.:) We get the hay on the website direct from the Dust Free Hay Company as the green packed pet shop variety. This is a mixture of dust free meadow hay with grasses including timothy etc. Each bag weighs between 2 to 2.5 kilos (the same as one of the hessian sacked small bags from the dfh company) and are sold in packs of 5 for £15. or 10 for £30. When uncompacted each individual bag fills one of the old style large black dustbins to overflowing.

If you're not sure which hay to try, why not get a couple of the sample bags and see which your piggies prefer.

My lot too LOVE the Oxbow Orchard Grass and often popcorn when it's time to refil the hayrack. They tried an Oat grass too once (although I can't remember the brand) which they enjoyed to.l

There's LOADS to try, but I've found the Oxbow hays always seem favourite here :)

wel i bought some from apetshop yesterday gonna try that next, then I'm gonna approch a local farm to see if i can get some straight from then, see if the boys like that too, gonna be trial and error for a while i think lol

Oops that should have said ordered monday inbreeding

How on earth did I miss this!!

I also use animal magic pet supplies and I prefer Oxbow timothy hay. It's nice and thick, great long strands and no nasties.

I use horse hay too for hay lofts and bedding but all pigs even the rescues much prefer Oxbow to eat. Infact I think they can't believe their luck the first time they taste it!

well the piggies love it:))

Just bumping this up.... I'm new too, there are sme many different types of hay to choose from. I gurus it is a matter of trying them and seeing what the piggies prefer.

for outdoors piggies, do you have a staple hay that you use all over the hutch for them to keep warm and eat, and then an extra special hay for treats? I thought this might be a good way to introduce new ones and alternate it a bit to avoid boredom.

Like I say, I'm new to this so any advice welcome! :{

Timothy vs meadow for bedding

as the title says... my new piggies are outdoors and I want to ensure they have plenty of soft hay but the Timothy hay I have (is lush, dust free and smells sweet) but it is quite coarse for bedding.

What do you think? do you think I should try a dust free meadow hay for bedding and get a hay rack for other hays?

thanks

I tend to buy in bulk along side my Mother in laws purchase for her horses. I just take from the barn when I need. Pat was telling me the other day hay will be hard to buy mid winter as the crop was so bad this year.

Not sure if that effects the Timothy hay people or not. I'm stocking up on ready grass and dry cut as a back up. Just in case.

Anyone else heard similar or same info?

Hi, I have outdoor piggies too. We used to use meadow hay for bedding but since they had a nasty fungal infection caught from the hay we now use readigrass. They can't bury themselves in in like you can with hay but they do seem to like it. We also use Oxbow Timothy hay in the manger.

Interesting you say that as my piggies have a fungal infection, they are 6 and 8 weeks old but it's likely they caught it from their Mum. Can I ask why it was caught from the hay? Thanks

We took them to Vedra who told us it was caught from fungal spores in the Hay, We then switched to readigrass and touch wood they've been good ever since ( I say good but I mean healthy, My boys are rather naughty:p)

still on the hunt for a really good dust free meadow hay for bedding

Hi, I've found some really good hays that my two piggies like, but am still on the hunt for a really good soft DUST FREE MEADOW HAY.

My piggies are outdoors so they need lots topped up frequently to keep them warm. I also buy different types for them to eat but they aren't right for bedding.

Have found great dust free Timothy hay but nothing so far that is soft enough to use tons of it in the hutch. Th timothy strands are quite spiky to use as bedding.

I'm based in south west London and don't know of a farm nearby otherwise that could be an option. Have tried shop varieties of meadow hay but they so dusty and horrible.

ANY SUGGESTIONS? Thanks really appreciate it.

This may be frowned upon but when my piggies were outdoors i used barley straw for bedding/snuggling/warmth and gave them meadow hay purely to eat. I found that Barley straw is very soft (unlike other straw) yet lets the wee through and stays fluffed up longer than hay so provides more warm air pockets for longer. I had no eye poke injuries using it. I used P@H compressed barley straw (which is very chopped, soft and fine) as a deep litter over the whole cage....and then bought long barley straw bagged up from the local garden centre for burrowing in the bedroom....having checked it first as some bags/makes were not as good as others. You can find good soft barley straw out there that is nowhere near as spikey as timothy hay and in view of a possible hay shortage it might be worth looking into sooner rather than later. (My pigs loved eating it as well)
