Can anyone tell me how long a large bale of hay from the Dust Free Hay company would last me with two gp's?

I am trying to locate hay in a bale size and even though I live in the middle of Salisbury Plain surrounded by horses I am yet to find some unless I whip it out of the field! LOL!

So if anyone knows where I can get a good quality bale on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border - let me know!

Failing that how big is the large bale on the DFH site?

Many thanks!

Wow, I'd love a bail of hay too! Could you not like knock in on a farmer and say is it possible to buy a bail of hay off you? The bigger farms are best to do this off, when I lived on one sometimes our fields didn't give use enough silage or hay bails so we bought some off the BIG farm in the area =]

I buy wood shavings in bails. Petsathome.

Cheers - sadly I can't seem to see any buildings connected to these fields with hay so can't ask anyone!

I don't use wood shavings as per the advice on here and buy the big bale of Aubiose and touch wood it's been really good, even got the owners of the shop to change from wood shavings to the same thing for their gp's as they were not aware of the probs! I currently buy a small bag of hay from them and it seems to be really good, just would be easier and more cost effective to get a big bale.

I see on the DFH site they do a large bale for £27, seems a lot of money but then I don't know how big it is or how long it will last?

I don't know what DFH is tbh. You could message them? I use wood shaving because I have no idea how to get hold of anything else. I don't drive and I live away from town in a high rise flat complex so unless I can get it from Pets at home or erm a pet store I don't know what else to buy =[

DFH = Dust Free Hay company! I've been reading about them on here and looked at their website!

Aubiose and Megazorb (another very popular on here) are both actually promoted as horse bedding! And doesn't cause the breathing probs, etc., that wood shavings can, (there is loads of info about it on here if it helps, it's where I found it all out!) I bought a HUGE bale for about £7ish and so far it's been great, doesn't smell, both my gp's seem to like it, so all good! I know that some people order it online so if you wanted to change you may be able to get it that way.

I don't know how much wood shavings cost but you might find not only is it better for your gp's but also better for your pocket!

Do you not have a local friday ad or local paper with adverts in, sometime you can get them quite cheap.

could you look in the yellow pages for a local riding stables and see if they will sell you a bale?

You could try looking in the phone book for farms near you and give then a ring. I'm lucky i have a horse so i just bring some home from the yard. i pay £3.50 for a bale and that lasts about a month and a half and thats with four pigs. I dont use it for bedding just eating but they always pull it down and sleep on it so in the end it fills there hutches. When you ring them check what type of hay they have as some farmers grow afew different types, some are more courser then others

Yes, a bail of wood shavings are ermm £11-£12. Wow, thats excellent for £7. Problem tho, Africa will chew everything he can, is it edable(sp?)? He tried to eat the bow on my dress last night whilst I was playing snake lol.

I am not sure if it's ok in large amounts, can't see it doing any harm though as mine eat it if's mixed up in their hay, food, etc., I've not had chance to see where you can buy it online, but I did find Megazorb which is another very popular choice on here and that's at £5.98 for HUGE 85 litre sack, if you spend under £50 it's £4.99 delivery so still cheaper than woodshavings and as you'll see from the comments under the product on this link, it's very good and much, much better for your GP!

We've used Megazorb and Equisorb (flax ) for some time and have never had any problems, the pigs love it. If you give them wooden sticks or willow balls etc to chew, they shouldn't deliberately eat the bedding but it my stick to their veg when they drag it out their bowls!

Regarding hay - we use DFH and usually it's pretty good quality hay, much, much better than the mouldy stuff that I used to buy in certain pet stores before I knew better and is far cheaper overall. A large bag of DFH is ENORMOUS about 4ft high, so make sure you have space to store it! It will last two pigs for months I would reckon. (For eating purposes rather than bedding I mean). The regular sized bales are pretty tightly compacted and 1 sack lasts for my 2 piggies outside (which have extra large helpings as they are outside) for around a month.

I get my hay from The Hay Experts. It's pretty expensive compared to the prices you'll pay from a farm, but beggars can't be choosers until I can hook myself up with a local farmer to get hay from.

Have you found any farm signs with the name of the farms in your area? And are you sure that the farms around you are hay-making farms? If you can find the name of the farm, often you can get a phone number for their owner/farmer from that :)
