Hayfever sufferer! Is there a hay free solution?

We are new owners and I am finding that the hay is giving me a terrible time with my hayfever. It didn't really occur to me before, stupidly. Does anyone else suffer and have you found a totally hay-free way of keeping healthy guiinea pigs? I have read the forums and see that vet bed may be a solution for bedding- any other ideas? And what about for feed? I read that hay is pretty critical there.

Any advice gratefully received! Atchoo.......
 
guinea pigs still need hay in their diet i think it makes up 70-80% so they will always have to be fed hay! have you tried dust free hay? will this make a difference? :)

I suffer terrible with seasonal rhinitis. All my pigs are indoors (I have 6) and they are on fleece blankets. I have found eliminating dust the best thing for my sensitive nostrils! ;D I use barn dried timothy hay and I no longer have any trouble. If you are really bad when handling it you could put something around your nose like a scarf, I've done that and find it works to a degree. :)

Hay cubes are a good solution - a friend of mine suffered and then went onto these and has never looked back. They're also good for working the piggies jaws and teeth - so two birds, one stone! Good luck O0 Hope you get sorted and don't suffer too much.
 
I have the same problem with the hay - I found immersion therapy has worked for me! Every time I stuck my hand in the hay for them, I had the itchy throat, wheezing, itchy, runny eyes and skin blotches (not attractive! ::) ) but by having to do it daily, it rarely affects me now, unless I touch the hay then touch my face without washing hands first. All my pigs are indoors and I use vetbed.
 
I'm like Boureki the more I use hay the less it affects me. However, be careful when opening a new bag/bale of hay or forage/readi grass as that always sets me off, I guess because any dust contained in the bag is suddenly allowed to float into the air.

I have been much better since I changed from woodshavings to vetbed. I still use hay, but the dust extracted stuff is much better and I hardly sneeze at all now.

I did once have a bag of dust free hay, but the pet shop told me they don't make it any more sadly :(
 
Dust Free Hay are proud of their dust extracted hay :) I've never found it dusty, but I don't suffer from hayfever and really don't want to :)

I'm an asthama sufferer and my sister has hay fever, we find the longer strands of hay much better to us and is also dust free.
