my 10 month old guinea pig ,Lewis presented with a head tilt on monday .He was seen by a vet,all over xrays performed. The diagnosis is urine infection,no bladder stones, enlarged left kidney.Severe ear infections in both ears,Sulftrim 0.4 mls twice aday, metacam (dog) 0.1 mls twice daily to be given .Has any members had experience of this, how quickly has the head tilt been resolved,or not resolved.Lewis is eating for himself, but I'm syringe feeding top ups,and the course of antibiotics are for 10 days.

I have only had one pig with a head tilt and she has an ear infection but only in one ear. In her case the antibiotics kicked in pretty quickly. She had Baytril. I had asked for Zithromax but the vet wanted to try Baytril first and against my better judgement it worked. If there is no improvement you could ask the vet to also prescribe Zithromax in addition to the Sulfatrim?

I have seen head tilt in piggies due to a parasite, E. Cuniculi. Its more common in rabbits .
The dose of metacam seems a bit low @eileen especially if he has urine and ear infections, maybe query it with your vet. My vet prescribes 0.4ml/kg of dog metacam for piggies. Hope he improves soon xx

Thanks Barbara, the vet was concerned due to enlarged kidney, therefore not willing to give a higher dose. The vet mentioned E cunlini, stated the xrays showed a longstanding ear infections,he was neutered at the same vets 5 weeks ago,it was not picked up then!Lewis has not had any symptoms of ear infection until monday. The rescue he came from stated he had an eye poke, but that transpired to be a chest infection,so he has a history of respiratory disease, unfortunatley his brother passed away from this and he was only 6 months old.xx
