All 5 of my piggies had upset tummies on Friday. No idea why - but as 5 in 2 cages were affected it must have been something they ate. Adopted all usual steps and precautions. Veg, pellets and hay all binned. Cages disinfected. All fed only hay, more hay and a few pellets with critical care top ups. Yesterday things were looking better, although when I got home from the meet there was still some fresh true diarrhoea in Violet, Poppy and Holly's cage. Identified the culprit was little Holly, so I've been syringe feeding her critical care and ProC through the night. By 6 this morning things looked a little better but when I came down after a few hours sleep this morning she was shrieking in pain, arching and passing mucus. All others look fine.

Decided not to force more CC into her in case it was a blockage. And made the trip to the emergency vets. Poor thing was passing blood in mucus by the time we arrived. She's got a form of colitis. She's been given injected pain relief, gastro protection and is on Septrin. I've been warned she's very poorly, but as she's young there is some hope she may recover. I decided not to have her admitted but to do the intensive nursing at home and to get her to my specialist vets tomorrow if she makes it through the night.

HUGS

Fingers VERY firmly crossed for poor Holly! make sure that you keep her hydrated.

Poor little girl :(

Healing vibes being sent by the truckload to Holly for a full &speedy recovery.
Well sent to all of them especially cute little Holly :luv:

Plenty of Energy vibes sent to you too as the busy nurse.

Might be worth asking the vet about metatone or Diarolyte (sp?) too to replace lost vitamins, minerals &salts etc &keep her hydrated

Luv the girls &I. Xx

I'm mixing in diaoralyte into the CC as well as Pro C. Vet has instructed me to ensure she has minimum 2mls fluid every hour. So far so good - she is taking fluids well to keep her hydrated. If she doesn't then I'm to go and collect a pack for giving subcutaneous fluids. She's still got some fight in her - just bit me !

I was quite impressed with the emergency vet who explained about making poop soup if I didn't have any probiotics. I reassured her I did have probiotics. It was good to hear poop soup being recommended by a non specialist emergency vet.

Your poor piggy! She must be in lots of pain! Colitis is not a nice condition to have. Poop soup sounds delightful especially if you are a piggy!

Good luck Vicki sounds like you have your hands full for sure. Hope you are able to get to grips with Holly's illness, I know its exhausting.

Big hugs. x

Poor Holly, this must be exhausting and so upsetting for you! You're doing all the right things and giving her the best chance possible. I agree with maybe including Metatone alongside the Dioralyte you're already giving. I wish you the best of luck, it's awful when a piggy is so poorly.

Awww hugs to both little Holly and to you!

Poor little one, I hope she has a very speedy recovery.

Sensing wishes to get well from my herd and me. Hold in there VickyA. You are a fab owner and a caring piggy mummy x x

thanks for all your support. At times like these I start to doubt my ability to look after these complex little creatures. She's currently nibbling on some hay. Ready for the next round of syringe feeding

Vicki, we just seen this. You being- doing great. giving Holly the best care and chance. Kath and I send you our best wishes and vibes. Hugs. To Holly you be a good piggie and do what mum says and do. Bite away. x

This is similar to what scrapper had Vicki, although he wasn't as bad by all accounts. The septrin worked very quickly for him. Hopefully your girly will improve quickly too x

That's reassuring to hear @pig in the city. I'm still doing syringe feeds and fluids. She's still receiving them with some enthusiasm but is still in obvious discomfort and things are far from good. But she's hanging in there and so shall I.

I hope holly gets better soon, pain relief for spasm of the bowel may help with diarrohea,it often accompanies colitis. It is emotionally draining for both of you,.

Hi just caught up with this, it must be very hard for you and Holly:(

Hope you can see the vet today and find a best cure for her!

The "shriek" is what mentioned in the thread started by @Scotty?

"Strange Guinea Pig Retching Sound?"

Sorry don't know how to add a link...

If so, one of our piggies Rupert had very similar symptoms as Holly. He had poos covered with blood and mucus and he often made this terrible sound shown in the video in the thread above.

It took us about two weeks to find the right medication for him, but it was baytril (oral) which eventually cleared the infection.

Fingers tightly crossed for both of you!

Still hanging in there. Off to vets shortly. Will post an update later. She's such a little dot of a piggy x

Oh Vicki i'm so sorry :( Sending lots of healing vibes for little Holly, I hope the vet can sort her out.
